Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

    Aalto Thesis Database

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng): The construction industry plays a significant role in the economy.
However, growth in its production has been lagging behind that of other industries both in Finland and elsewhere in Europe.
This postponed growth may well be coupled with new business opportunities.

The objective of the study is to develop a method of requirements management and integrate it into a contractor's project-delivery system especially from the case contractor's point of view in the context of Finland.
The case contractor is Fira Ltd.
Project-specific environments are seen as boundaries vis-á-vis project-delivery systems.

The study is composed of theoretical part and an empirical part.
In the theoretical part, the key aspects of the theory of requirements engineering, those of requirements management, and the other selected theoretical bases are reviewed.
The one-dimensional practice of requirements engineering is expanded to requirements management; then, the applications of requirements management to the construction industry are studied.
As the key contribution of this study, a framework with novel aspects is synthesized, on the basis of review of all three areas mentioned above.
The framework covers a requirements management process and a method for management of service-focused construction projects.

The empirical work was conducted as case-study research in which Fira's main service-focused project-delivery reference, the Sofiakylä 2 Care Home, was analysed and mapped in view of the new framework.
The design phase of the case project was executed through application of the trademark concept of the Firan Verstas service, which enabled comprehensive documentation of the focal requirements' management.
The key results of the case study were the scores derived for the various phases of requirements management in the service and suggestions for improvement in the quality of requirements management.

The research revealed the current level of requirements management in the Firan Verstas service, and the realistic conclusions can be drawn on how to improve this service, especially from the case contractor's point of view.
The framework and case-study analysis for requirements management as applied here should be useful for other contractors and engineering companies, who can study their level of requirements management on this basis.
For further research, quantitative analysis for multiple projects and a closer focus on one or two phases are suggested.
Abstract (fin): Rakennusteollisuudella on merkittävä rooli taloudessa.
Rakentamisen tuottavuuden kehittyminen on kuitenkin ollut jatkuvasti heikkoa niin Suomessa kuin muualla Euroopassa.
Tämä kasvupotentiaali luo mahdollisuuksia uusien liiketoimintojen kehittymiselle.
Ala synnyttää ja tarjoa enemmän arvoa tuottavia ratkaisuja asiakkaille.

Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on kehittää metodi vaatimustenhallinnalle ja integroida se rakennusliikkeen palvelutarjontaan, erityisesti kohdeyrityksen näkökulmasta Suomen kontekstissa.
Tutkimuksessa käytetty kohdeyritys on Fira Oy.
Tutkimuksen painopiste on rakennusliikkeen projektiympäristössä, sillä projektia tuotettaessa tulee huomioida projektiympäristön tekijät.

Tutkimus koostuu teoreettisesta osuudesta ja empiirisestä osuudesta.
Teoreettisessa osuudessa esitetään vaatimustenhallinnan teorian ja vaatimusten johtamisen keskeiset näkökulmat.
Erityinen huomio on johdettavuuden ulottuvuuden kytkeminen muuten hyvin yksiulotteiseen vaatimustenhallintaan.
Tämän jälkeen esitetään vaatimusten johtamisen sovellukset rakennusprojekteissa.
Tämän tutkimuksen keskeisenä kontribuutiona on vaatimusten johtamisen viitekehys, joka perustuu kolmeen esitettyyn osa-alueeseen teoreettisessa osuudessa.
Viitekehys kattaa vaatimusten johtamisen prosessin ja metodit rakennusprojektin vaatimustenhallintaan.

Tutkimuksen empiirinen osuus tehtiin tapaustutkimuksena tutkimalla Firan keskeistä palvelulähtöisen rakentamisen referenssiä, Sofiakylä 2 hoivakotia.
Hanke analysoitiin vertaamalla sitä koostettuun viitekehykseen.
Projektin suunnitteluvaiheessa hyödynnettiin Firan Verstas palvelua, joka mahdollisti kattavan dokumentaation tapaustutkimusta varten.
Näin alkuperäistä dokumentaatiota voitiin verrata viitekehyksen osa-alueisiin.
Keskeiset tulokset tapaustutkimuksessa olivat viitekehyksen eri osa-alueille annetut arvosanat ja suositukset vaatimusten johtamisen kehittämiseksi.

Tapaustutkimuksen tulosten antama kuva vaatimusten johtamisen tasosta mahdollistaa johtopäätökset siitä, miten palvelun vaatimusten johtamista voidaan kehittää erityisesti kohdeyrityksen näkökulmasta.
Suunniteltu viitekehys ja tapaustutkimusta hyödyntävä analyysi hyödyttää kohdeyrityksen lisäksi myös muita rakennusliikkeitä ja rakennusalan yrityksiä, koska he voivat selvittää oman toimintansa vaatimusten johtamisen tason viitekehystä ja analyysia hyödyntämällä.
Jatkotutkimukseksi voidaan suositella kvantitatiivista analyysia useista hankkeista ja viitekehyksen yhteen tai kahteen osa-alueeseen keskittyvää tutkimusta.
