Abstract (eng): | The flight capability of a butterfly is an important research focus when studying butterfly populations. In the thesis a positioning system for butterflies was developed. UHF RFID using passive tags was chosen for the positioning. A small butterfly antenna was developed and the localization of the butterflies was accomplished by using directive reader antennas connected to RFID readers. The used RFID implementation did not include localization and it had to be done on system level. The thesis presents different positioning methods based on electro-magnetic signals. A technique based on measuring the attenuation of the received signal strength with distance was used to find out the positions of the butterflies. The received signal strength was translated into a distance estimate by using experimental results from calibration measurements. The biggest problems in the distance estimation were the anisotropic radiation pattern of the butterfly antenna and the signal interference caused by reflections. In the thesis we successfully designed and implemented a fully functional positioning system for butterflies. This enables the research of the flight patterns and activity of butterflies. |
Abstract (fin): | Perhospopulaatioiden käyttäytymistä tutkittaessa perhosen lentokyky on tärkeä tutkimuskohde. Diplomityössä kehitettiin perhosille paikannusjärjestelmä UHF-RFID - tekniikkaa ja passiivisia RFID -tageja soveltaen. Työssä suunniteltiin pieni, perhosen selkään kiinnitettävä UHF -antenni. Perhoset paikannettiin suuntaavilla lukija-antenneilla, jotka oli kytketty RFID -lukijoihin Itse paikannus jouduttiin toteuttamaan järjestelmätasolla, koska RFID -tekniikka ei itsessään sisällä toteutusta paikannukselle. Työssä esitellään erilaisia sähkömagneettisiin signaaleihin perustuvia paikannustapoja, joista käytettäväksi valittiin vastaanotetun tehon vaimentumiseen matkan funktiona perustuva etäisyydenmääritys. Antennien vastaanottama teho muutetaan etäisyydeksi kalibraatiomittauksista saatujen kokeellisten tulosten avulla. Suurimpia ongelmia etäisyydenmittaukseen aiheuttivat perhosantennin epäisotrooppinen säteilykuvio ja heijastuksista aiheutuva interferenssi mittaussignaalissa. Diplomityössä onnistuttiin luomaan toimiva paikannusjärjestelmä perhosille. Tämä mahdollistaa perhosten lentoratojen ja -aktiivisuuden mittaamisen. |
