Abstract (eng): The thesis studies how the received signal strength indicator (RSSI) can be used for providing position estimates of a moving target in an indoor environment.
Tests confirmed the fast fading as the biggest source for variance in RSSI measurements.
Measurements were done using both classic Bluetooth and Bluetooth low energy technology, both of which are part of the new Bluetooth 4.0 specification.
Signal propagation was simulated using 2-dimensional ray tracing.
Based on the ray tracing a RSSI distribution map was created.

The RSSI map allowed conversion from RSSI measurements to position estimates.
Individual position estimates were combined by utilising the floor plan as a way for removing target's impossible movement patterns between two time instances.
Tracking system accuracy was evaluated in a typical office environment which had both heavy and light walls.
The surface area of the test area was 600 square meters.
Three access points where used for tracking.
The test run gave as average position estimate error of 1.6 meters and maximum error of less than 4.0 meters.
Abstract (fin): Työssä tutkittiin miten vastaan otetun signaalin voimakkuuden indikaattoria (RSSI) voidaan käyttää paikkatiedon estimointiin.

Kartan avulla RSSI-mittauksista voitiin muodostaa paikkaestimaatteja.
