Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.

Abstract (eng): The increasing internationalization of firms and the growing tendency of offering projects to customers instead of stand-alone products have created a need for a new organizational structure - a project-based MNC.
This study examines the organization of the project-based MNC from the information processing perspective.
It aims to understand how the project-based MNC is organized and, especially, how integration is facilitated between the different organization levels.

The thesis was conducted as an embedded single-case study.
The case company was the telecommunication equipment supplier Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN).
The six network implementation projects that were researched covered half of NSN's eight geographical regions.
The case study was conducted through totally 23 interviews, encompassing not only firm, region, and project level, but also subcontractor interviews.
The organization and information processing of NSN was analysed through a framework, where the information processing capacities (organization structure and integration mechanisms) were compared with the information processing requirements (technology, interdepartmental relations, and environment and customer relationship).

The study point out that integration is facilitated in project-based MNCs in following interfaces: global to-region, region-to-global, region-to-project, project-to-region, project-to-project and within-project.
The results, additionally, distinguish between subtle (e.g., informal communication and cross departmental relations) and impersonal integration mechanisms (e.g., standardization, centralization and planning).
The findings of the thesis indicate that integration is facilitated in project-based MNCs to a greater extent by subtle than impersonal integration mechanisms and that the proportion of subtle mechanisms increases as the information requirements rise.
Lastly, the study identified that there was lack of fit between the information processing requirements and capacities in two of the six case projects.

The thesis contributes to the existing literature by studying the organization of a new type of a MNC the project-based MNC, and by providing evidence on how information processing is facilitated between different organizational levels in them.
Abstract (fin): Yritysten kiihtyvä kansainvälistyminen sekä kasvava trendi myydä kokonaisvaltaisia projekteja yksittäisten tuotteiden sijasta on synnyttänyt uuden organisaatiomuodon -monikansallisen projektiorganisaation.
Tämä tutkimus analysoi monikansallista projektiorganisaatiota informaatioprosessoinnin näkökulmasta.
Tutkimus selvittää miten monikansallinen projektiyritys organisoidaan keskittyen erityisesti eri organisaatiotasojen välisen integroinnin tutkimiseen.

Tutkimus toteutettiin tapaustutkimuksena.
Tutkittavaksi kohteeksi valittiin kuusi Nokia Siemens Networksin (NSN) tietoliikenneverkkoprojektia.
Valitut projektit kattoivat neljä NSN:n kahdeksasta regioonasta.
Yhteensä 23 haastattelua tehtiin pääkonttori-, regioona-, projekti- ja alihankkijatasolla.
NSN:n organisaatiota ja informaatioprosessointia analysoitiin käyttämällä viitekehystä, jossa informaatioprosessointitarpeita (teknologia, osastojen väliset suhteet, ympäristö, asiakassuhde) verrattiin informaatioprosessointikapasiteettiin (organisaatio rakenne ja integrointimekanismit).

Tutkimus osoittaa, että monikansallisessa projektiyrityksessä integrointia tapahtuu seuraavissa rajapinnoissa: pääkonttori-regioona, regioona-pääkonttori, regioona-projekti, projekti-regioona ja projekti-projekti, sekä myös projektin sisällä.
Integrointimekanismit jaotellaan sen lisäksi hienovaraisiin (esim. epämuodollinen viestintä ja osastojen välinen kommunikointi) ja persoonattomiin mekanismeihin.
Diplomityön tulokset osoittavat, että monikansallisissa projektiyrityksissä käytetään enemmän hienovaraisia mekanismeja ja että niiden prosentuaalinen osuus nousee informaatioprosessointitarpeiden kasvaessa.
Tutkimuksessa havaittiin myös, että kahdessa kuudesta valitusta projektista informaatioprosessointitarpeet ja -kapasiteetit eivät olleet tasapainossa.

Tämä diplomityö täydentää olemassa olevaa kirjallisuutta esittelemällä uudenlaisen organisaatiorakenteen -monikansallisen projektiyrityksen.
Lisäksi tutkimus esittää uraauurtavia löydöksiä siitä miten informaatioprosessointi toimii monikansallisissa projektiyrityksissä eri organisaatio tasojen välillä.
