Abstract (eng): | A service that is mixing together multiple data sources or services in the Internet is called a mashup. As part of the Web 2.0 development, mashups have become a popular way in developing new, innovative Internet services. This study discusses various business models of Internet services in general and analyzes business models for mashup services using a well established framework for service innovation. This study analyzes business models, value chains, and cash flows between mashup value network participants, and mashup service API providers in particular. The work evaluates if successful business models exists generating profit for mashup developers and for API service providers, and discusses the value creation mechanisms and division of costs and revenues between the actors in the value network. The research method used in this work is a well established research framework for service innovation and business models. This STOF framework is applied to selected case studies and handles four core business model domains: services, technology, organizational arrangements and financial issues. The findings of this work demonstrate that companies providing data to mashup developers have been able to obtain a significant user base with active and innovative developers, speeding up service innovation and opening up new business opportunities for the data providers. The findings also indicate that privacy issues may be the most significant factor prohibiting end users and mashup developers from using the services provided by the data providers. |
Abstract (fin): | Internetin mashup-toteutukset kokoavat yhteen dataa ja palvelukomponentteja olemassa olevista Internetin palveluista. STOF-mallia. STOF-mallin avulla uusia palveluinnovaatioita ja liiketoimintamalleja pystytään analysoimaan kattavasti palveluiden, teknologian, organisaatiorakenteiden, sekä taloudellisten tekijöiden näkökulmista. Työn tutkimustulokset esittävät, että tutkituilla yrityksillä on ennestään erittäin kannattavat liiketoimintamallit, joita mashup-palvelut täydentävät kiihdyttämällä uusien palveluiden innovointia ja luomalla uutta liiketoimintaa sisällöntarjoajille. Työn tutkimustulokset osoittavat myös, että sisällöntarjoajien tulisi kiinnittää nykyistä enemmän huomiota loppukäyttäjien yksityisyydensuojaan, jotta mashup-palveluiden kehittäjät ja loppukäyttäjät pystyisivät paremmin kontrolloimaan henkilökohtaisten tietojensa käyttöä. |
