Abstract (eng): | Paper companies are developing their outbound logistics operations towards item level supply chain management. This development requires item level identification of paper reels. Radio frequency identification and belt bar code are recognised as the most promising technology solutions. This thesis investigates paper reel identification, with an aim to find out how the paper industry could benefit from using automatic identification technologies in its supply chain. The literary part examines the areas of paper industry, supply chain management and technologies for automatic identification. Thereafter, the current state of reel identification is researched in a case study, which compares the identification and handling processes of three Finnish and three Swedish paper mills, and three harbours. The study also analyses the current way of using label information, and calculates the costs and benefits of automatic identification. It was found that radio frequency identification (RFID) is not yet mature for use in paper reel identification in a complete supply chain. However, the technology may provide solutions for mill and customer operations. Hence, it is recommended to continue testing with RFID technology. There is potential to improve paper reel identification and handling processes in Finland. Thus, it is recommended to proceed with the implementation of belt bar code technology. This recommendation is supported by calculations, which point out that investing in automatic identification technology and taking item level identification into use bring economical benefits for the supply chain parties. |
Abstract (fin): | Yksittäisten tuotteiden seuraaminen toimitusketjussa on paperiyhtiöille yhä tärkeämpää. Tällöin myös yksittäisten paperirullien tunnistamista on välttämätöntä. Lupaavimpina tekniikoina paperirullien tunnistamisessa pidetään radiotaajuuteen perustuvaa tunnistamista (RFID) ja viivakoodia. Tässä tutkimuksessa käsitellään paperirullien tunnistamista. Tavoitteena on selvittää, mitä hyötyä paperiyhtiöille olisi automaattisen tunnistustekniikan käytöstä. |
