Abstract (eng): | This thesis examines the electricity retail business and households' price and switching behaviour in the electricity markets. The Finnish electricity market opened up to all households in September 1998. Since the deregulation of the market, only a relatively small number of households has switched electricity retailer or renegotiated a new contract with their local electricity retailer. Lately however, due to the significant rise in electricity market prices, households have become more active in the market. This increasing market activity in tum increases the risks involved in electricity retail business. Price is the most important factor in a consumer's buying decision concerning electricity. Firstly, households that have switched their supplier have saved an estimated 113 Euros a year, translating to an approximate nine percent saving in the customer's total electricity bill. Secondly, only five percent of households have switched their retailer without expecting savings during the first year. Furthermore, customers who have switched due to price reasons are most likely to switch their retailer again. Finally, it is clear those households that consume more, especially concerning electric heating, have been the most active in the market. An increase in price of the consumer's electricity can work as an impulse that leads to them switching electricity retailer. Also changes in consumer electricity distribution prices affects market activity. So far, customer loyalty has mostly been based on long relationships with the local electricity companies. Still, most consumers find it hard to compare different contracts and few households actively compare the prices of different retailers. Only rarely has the cheapest supplier in the market been sought. Consequently, marketing of electricity is mostly based on price comparisons, where the lower contract price is compared to the customer's current higher price. In this study, consumer response to price changes was examined with the price elasticity of electricity demand. Firstly, it was discovered that single price changes do not remarkably affect demand. Secondly, price elasticity of electricity demand was found to be very occasional. A retailer's electricity demand is affected by many factors, of which a competitor's price level is amongst the most important ones. Finally, a strong correlation was found between the price level of retailers and the number of customers to have switched. |
Abstract (fin): | Diplomityö tarkastelee sähkön vähittäismyyntiä ja kotitalouksien käyttäytymistä sähkön ostajina avoimilla sähkömarkkinoilla. Vain vähäinen osa kotitalouksista on toistaiseksi vaihtanut sähkönmyyjäänsä. Markkinahintojen noususta johtuvan uuden tilanteen vaikutuksesta kotitalouksien aktiivisuus sähkömarkkinoilla on kasvussa. Kasvava markkina-aktiviteetti lisää samalla sähkönmyyntiliiketoimintaan liittyviä riskejä. Hinta on sähkön ostopäätöksessä ehdottomasti tärkein kriteeri. |
