Abstract (eng): | The main purpose of this study is to clarify the propulsion machinery alternatives for ice class crude oil Aframax tankers with low speed main engine and single screw. Demands derived from ice operation for the propulsion machinery are clarified and possible configurations to overcome the increased resistance are introduced. Economically interesting options are selected and both economic and technical comparisons are made for the typical ice class IA Aframax tanker. Requirements being caused by cold conditions and ice operation are also included. This study presents also the phenomenon of increased demand for ice class crude oil tankers from 2003 onwards. For the typical open water optimized machinery is peculiar the propulsion power remarkable decrease in increased resistance conditions like ice. This is a consequence of bollard pull effect and low speed diesel engine torque characteristics. The key question is, how to tune open water designed machinery to overcome the ice running requirements. Economically interesting alternatives to increase thrust on low vessel speeds are selected for the comparison: decreasing of FP-propeller pitch, using of controllable pitch propeller and extension of main engine operating area. An economical and technical comparison made for the typical route clarifies differences between alternatives. With decreased FP-propeller pitch, the larger bore engine turned out to be economically better than the one with the smaller bore. The common rail technology enables to extend the engine operating area, which proved to give the best economical result and significantly better ice going capability than the ice class rule requirement. Controllable pitch propeller alternative proved to have slightly worse economy than decreased FP-propeller pitch. The differences in economical results are mostly the consequence of varying open water service speeds. The improved ice operation capability for controllable pitch propeller or extended operating area engine alternatives has a positive influence on operating economy. As the ice operation includes many dependencies, the optimum result is sensitive too selections and assumptions adopted. For that reason the results of the study should be taken as guidance. |
Abstract (fin): | Tämän työn päätarkoituksena on esittää jääluokitetun Aframax-raakaöljytankkerin koneistovaihtoehtoja perinteisen propulsioratkaisun pohjalta. Kahdesta pienennetyn potkurin nousun pääkonevaihtoehdosta suuremman sylinterihalkaisijan omaava osoittautui taloudellisemmaksi vaihtoehdoksi. |
