Abstract (eng): | This study was initiated as AWA Oy (Advanced Warehouse Automation Oy) saw it necessary to improve its product: Automated Warehouse (AW). In this paper the joint of beams to the columns were specifically targeted, studied and designed. Seemingly the best solution was proposed and its capacity is calculated. It is pointed out that welding and bolting methods have their own advantage and disadvantages. Blind bolting systems such as HollowBolt, FlowDrill and others were reviewed for further alternatives. Prefabricated jointing systems are also presented in order to observe the possibility of its application to the structure. After an in-depth consideration, FlowDrill was selected as the most suitable method for the purpose. FlowDrill is a friction drilling method that uses frictional heat to soften the metal which allows penetration of the tool bit. It is a chip less drilling operation that produces cylindrical wall where threads can be made. FlowDrill system provides added freedom to the design of joint. Contoured Sandwich Plate proposed in this study uses full advantage of this relatively novel system. It was shown that Contour Sandwich Plate joint is strong enough for the purpose stated in this study. When stronger joint capacity is required, such as in case of earthquake zone, modification will be necessary. |
