Logging on to the customer computers

  • Aalto University staff members log on to the customer computer using the Aalto username and password.
  • Other customers log on using a shared username and password.

Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

    Aalto Thesis Database

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng): Pyrolysis oil can be produced from various biomass sources.
Numerous processes have been developed to produce it but all of them are based on thermal pyrolysis of biomass.
This master thesis is about pyrolysis oil in heat production.

Main objectives of this study were to define technical requirements of pyrolysis oil in heat production and make economic estimates about the competitiveness of pyrolysis oil compared to other heating fuels.
In technical study, the main focus was to find out the special requirements for pyrolysis oil in logistics and heating applications.
The research methods used in this thesis are literature review, interviews and field tests of pyrolysis oil in Masala heating plant in Kirkkonummi.
Plant is owned and operated by Fortum Power and Heat Oy.

The main objectives were achieved within this thesis.
Technical requirements for generating heat with pyrolysis oil were defined and developed during the thesis work.
The ongoing project, in which this master thesis was written, will continue in the fall of 2010.

In the economic evaluation, a model was created to estimate the competitiveness of heat generated from pyrolysis oil compared to other heat generation methods.
The model was based on an example investment study in which a plant using heavy fuel was converted to use pyrolysis oil.
Abstract (fin): Pyrolyysiöljyä voidaan valmistaa lukuisista eri biomassoista.
Tuotantoprosesseja öljylle on kehitetty lukuisia, mutta ne kaikki pohjautuvat biomassan termiseen pyrolyysiin.
Tässä diplomityössä tutkitaan pyrolyysiöljyn käyttöä fossiilisten polttoaineiden korvaajana lämmöntuotannossa.

Diplomityön tärkeimmät tavoitteet oli selvittää pyrolyysiöljyn tekniset edellytykset lämmöntuotannossa sekä tutkia pyrolyysiöljyn kilpailukykyä eri vaihtoehtoja vastaan.
Teknisten selvitysten painopisteenä oli tutkia pyrolyysiöljyn käyttöketjun erityisvaatimuksia logistiikan sekä öljyn käyttökohteen osalta.
Tutkimusmenetelminä käytettiin kirjallisuustutkimusta, haastatteluja sekä polttokokeita, jotka suoritettiin Fortum Power and Heat Oy:n omistamalla lämpökeskuksella Kirkkonummen Masalassa.

Keskeiset tavoitteet saavutettiin diplomityössä.
Tekniset edellytykset pyrolyysiöljyn käyttöön lämmöntuotannossa ovat olemassa ja niitä kehitettiin edelleen tämän diplomityön aikana.
Projekti, johon myös tämä diplomityö liittyy, jatkuu syksyllä Taloudellisessa tarkastelussa luotiin esimerkki-investointilaskelman avulla malli, jolla pyrolyysiöljyllä tuotetun lämmön kilpailukykyä voidaan verrata vaihtoehtoisiin lämmöntuotantomuotoihin.
Mallin pohjana käytetyssä laskelmassa selvitettiin tarvittavat investoinnit siirryttäessä raskasöljylaitoksella pyrolyysiöljyn käyttöön.
