Abstract (eng): | Intumescent coatings are fire protection materials which expand due to the heat of a fire. High porosity and thickness of the expanded layer provide it with a high thermal resistance. Organic intumescent coatings also transform into a thermally stable char. Intumescent coatings have four basic components: a gas source, a binder, a charring catalyst and a carbon source. Thermal decomposition of the gas source produces bubbles in the binder material, while the charring catalyst reacts with the carbon source into char. The components should be compatible with each other and the binder should have an appropriate viscosity to trap the gas being generated. The produced char should have a high porosity, a small pore size and a uniform structure. In addition, it should be mechanically and thermally stable. A polyester coating was modified by introducing various additives into it with the purpose of increasing thermal resistance it has during a fire. Ammonium polyphosphate (charring catalyst), pentaerythritol (carbon source) and melamine (gas source) were added into the coating. Effects of Mg(OH)2, Mg(OH)2-SiO2 core-shell particles, SiO2 microspheres and graphene oxide on the performance of the intumescent formulation were studied. A custom fire test using a Bunsen burner was developed for this purpose. Further testing was performed using a cone heater of a standard cone calorimeter. A 400 micrometre coating using a composition with 50 m-% of a mixture of ammonium polyphosphate, pentaerythritol and melamine (molar ratio 2:1:1) expanded by a factor of 19 in the custom fire test and showed improvement in thermal resistance compared to the unmodified coating. Its expansion was reduced by low coating viscosity during fire testing. Other additives had an adverse effect on the performance of the coating. Mg(OH)2 and SiO2 increased the viscosity of the coating, but the 400 micrometre coatings with these additives had low expansion factors. In the fire tests using the cone heater, all compositions failed to expand and provided little insulation. |
Abstract (fin): | Paisuvat pinnoitteet laajenevat lämmön vaikutuksesta, muodostaen paksun ja huokoisen kerroksen, joka suojaa tulipalon vaikutukselta. Polyesteripinnoitteen palosuojaominaisuuksia pyrittiin parantamaan sekoittamalla siihen eri lisäaineita. |
