Abstract (eng): | Servitization of the economy has also affected software industry, leading software vendors to transform into a new model of doing business called Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). Traditional service approaches are not applicable in a SaaS-environment due to the highly technical nature of the service provided. Because SaaS has been mostly discussed from the perspective of computer science litera-ture, characteristics of SaaS in service production are still unmapped. This thesis studies what type of customer involvement activities are beneficial for a successful SaaS service implementation. The question is addressed through an empirical study set in the context of a Finnish SaaS-provider. This thesis employs the Grounded Theory method. The study found out that there are several different activities that can be applied for a successful SaaS service implementation. The customer of such implementa-tion can take several different roles, most of which will have direct impact on the delivery success. The customer should use centralized resources for the project completion, while involving other members of the organization to the project on a personal level. Any trainings regarding the usage of the new software should be held physically, with as many attendants as possible. The customer should also take strong initiative regarding any customization process the service provider may offer. The thesis contributes to the service literature by creating a link between SaaS and customer involvement with an organizational research approach. The author encourages the findings to be further tested in other empirical settings. |
Abstract (fin): | Teollisuuden yleinen palvelullistuminen on vaikuttanut myös sovellustuotantoon johtaen uuteen liiketoimintamalliin, joka tunnetaan nimellä verkkosovelluspalvelu (SaaS). |
