Abstract (eng): | This thesis examines material flows of copper in Scandinavia. The aim of this study is to develop better data and understanding of the material flows of copper in society in Scandinavia, from mines through refining and fabricating until the end of life and recycling. The data used in the previous studies is based on global data, which does not necessarily illustrate reality in Scandinavia. The theoretical part of this study presents copper as a material, its properties, use and history. Also the processes used in Scandinavia during the whole life cycle of copper are illustrated. In this study several material flow analysis and life cycle assessment methods have been described and used. The study aims to describe and clarify the material flows of copper and environmental impacts caused by processing with these assessment tools. The operative method used in the analysis consists mainly from a mixture of Material Flow Analysis (MFA) and Material Input per Service Unit (MIPS) methods. In addition to that more specific data has been taken into consideration, giving the work the life cycle assessment (LeA) perspective. The practical part concentrates on copper cycle. The data collected from Scandinavian copper industry was analyzed, and as a result it was found out how much raw materials are needed in the different processing stages to produce one ton of finished copper product. The study concentrates on material flows; however energy and transporting are not included. Not only the copper ore, but also water, chemicals and other materials, which are used for processing, have been taken into the account. The results consider also how much by-products, wastes, metal and carbon dioxide emissions the copper processing produces. |
Abstract (fin): | Tässä diplomityössä on tutkittu kuparin materiaalivirtoja Pohjoismaissa. Elinkaariarviointi menetelmästä on mukana yksityiskohtaisia tietoja, kuten päästöjen määrän mittaaminen. Kokeellisessa osassa on keskitytty kuparin kiertoon. |
