Abstract (eng): | This work provides new insights to the strategic roles of manufacturing and manufacturing related challenges that Finnish technology start-up companies are facing during ramp-up of operations. The start-up companies are seen as a potential way to create new jobs and to support exports, which is crucially important for national economy in Finland. The research was executed as multiple case study using limited sample theory generation method by Eisenhardt. Three case companies were selected and interviewed and the results were discussed during strategic manufacturing framework by Johansen and Riis. All the studied companies were spin-offs of Aalto-university. The results indicate that the strategic roles of manufacturing in Finnish start-up companies follow closely the strategic manufacturing framework, with the exception of benchmarking facility which was not identified as part of development path in any of the companies. Limited customer and target market familiarity and technology, not customer, driven development were identified as major obstacles for the business development in the studied companies. High integrated or immature manufacturing processes increase the likelihood of co-locating of manufacturing and R&D which can be beneficial to retain the generated jobs in high cost countries such as Finland. The findings were supported by the existing literature. |
Abstract (fin): | Tässä työssä luotiin uusia näkökulmia tuotannon strategiseen rooliin ja tuotannon haasteisiin, joita suomalaiset kasvuyritykset kokevat teollisen toimintansa alkuvaiheessa. |
