Logging on to the customer computers

  • Aalto University staff members log on to the customer computer using the Aalto username and password.
  • Other customers log on using a shared username and password.

Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

    Aalto Thesis Database

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng): The purpose of this thesis was to map the actions needed to rationalize the materials handling at the company of study.
The analysis consisted of an inductive investigation of the business units, a poll among personnel in leading positions and quantitative analysis' of information stored in the company's data bases.

Before any conclusions were drawn from the analysis a wide range of technical literature was processed, mainly from the areas of logistics, data processing, organizational change, methods of investigation and materials handling.
A considerable part of the general problems described in the literature corresponded with the findings of the analysis, but some specific problems related to the recycling paradigm emerged as well.

The discovered problems were documented and divided into groups, which were evaluated in sorting matrixes for qualitative data by improvement potential and economical impact on the organization.
Solution models where then developed to overcome the problem areas, and judged by their assessed effect on the problems and the cost of implementation.
Some of the proposed solutions were found suitable for implementation within the working range of this study.
They were put to try in a testing environment and were then evaluated by the users.

The conclusions of the study were that to rationalize the materials handling in the studied company there is need for more wide-spread and efficient methods for data acquisition in all parts of the organization.
Decision support systems (DSS) could help managers in controlling and governing the organization with updated information on the current situation.
A process-based way of organizing work and a documentation of all critical processes and information flows would benefit the company even further.
The author suggests that these changes, combined with the developed specific solutions and a more transparently collaborating organization, would lead to both a faster turn-over of invested capital and less redundant work in all business units.
After implementing these changes the next step would be to develop the organization towards an agile corporation, where continuous improvement is the norm.
The more employees that participate in the developing process, the stronger the organization becomes to tackle future challenges.
