Abstract (eng):The sector of information and communication technology is developing rapidly and is connecting already more than four billion people.
Climate change has caused more awareness of emissions and how to reduce them.
Mobile operators have challenges with profitability due to investments in new technologies, energy prices and EU's regulations.
Mobile operators are interested in energy efficiency to decrease emissions.
The objective of this thesis is to study different methods and technologies to save energy at the LTE base stations, which are the main energy consuming parts of the LTE networks.
One goal was also to understand the connection between energy efficiency and user experience.
Expert interviews were done about the connection between energy e ciency and user experience.
As a result was found that decreasing user experience for increasing energy efficiency is not possible.
In the laboratory examination various measurements about alternative possibilities to save energy in the base stations were conducted.
Additionally it was taken into account that mobile user experience should not be weakened because of the energy efficiency development.
According to the measurements the most potential technology to save energy is related to the switching between MIMO and SIMO configurations.
Based on this result a model calculating savings in the whole network was developed.
The results indicate that up to one million euros annual savings are possible when applying this technology to the typical mobile network.
Abstract (fin):Ilmastonmuutos on lisännyt huomiota haitallisiin päästöihin ja niiden vähentämiseen.
Tuloksien perusteella muodostettiin askennallinen malli, jonka avulla koko verkon energian säästöt voitiin laskea.
Mallista saatiin tulokseksi jopa miljoonan euron vuosittaiset säästöt.
