Abstract (eng):This thesis studies the impact of passenger load and different load scenarios on the energy consumption of escalators.
The scope of thesis is analysis of energy used, in kWh, by an escalator pair with specific technical requirements, and effect of the passenger flow on energy consumption of the selected escalator pair.
Previous studies revealed lack of knowledge about the effects of power saving modes on the power consumption profiles of escalators.

This study provides typical daily energy consumption and people flow patterns for the escalator pair in an average store in the shopping center located in Helsinki, Finland.
Additional data about escalator load impact and effects energy saving modes on electrical energy consumption and comparison of consumed electrical energy of escalator pair and the whole store is presented.

Results of this thesis showed that in situations with relatively low traffic flow, particularly in department store environment, the main factor that affects energy consumption is the frequency of traffic flow.
Results encourage continuing further long-term measurements of both electricity consumption and people flow patterns of intermittent escalators in situations with a different people flow frequency for further model development.
