Abstract (eng): The aim of this thesis was to create a general description of monitoring measurements associated with railroad track stability and the most important factors related to the performance of those measurements.
The thesis also deals with the meaning of the measurements as indicators of danger of slope failure and the aspects related to the processing of the measurements.
The theme was studied through literature review and the information was supplemented by expert interviews.

Measured parameter values should be evaluated primarily by their rate of change rather than their absolute values.
The danger of failure can be associated with stability related negative changes in embankment environment which are the increase of train velocity, axle weight or the height of railroad embankment, the water level rise induced by culvert failures or general rise of ground water table and the build up of discontinuities in track.
The problem areas associated with stability can be determined by ground investigations and stability calculations.
Most probable problem areas are settlement zones which are detected by track inspections and subsoil's which are sensitive to dynamic load i.e. sensitive clays, loose silts and clays containing thin silt or sand layers.
Abstract (fin): Työn tavoitteena oli luoda yleiskuvaus radan stabiliteetin seurannassa käytetyistä mittausmenetelmistä ja niiden toimivuuteen liittyvistä tärkeimmistä tekijöistä.
