Abstract (eng): | The number of firms with employee stock option schemes has increased rapidly in Finland. 90 percent of Helsinki Stock Exchange listed companies had such a scheme in the beginning of 2003. Latest financial research argues that employee stock options are less valuable for employees than they are for investors with well-diversified portfolios. This Master's thesis studies the market valuation of employee stock options. At present, Finland is the only country in the world where employee stock options are listed in an exchange. Hence, there is a unique opportunity to investigate this topic using Finnish data. The aim of the study is to determine whether the lower values of the stock options for the employees affect also the market prices of these options. The data of this study consists of all employee stock option trades that were made in the Helsinki Stock Exchange during the years 2000 and 2001. In this study, the prices of employee stock option trades are compared to the theoretical upper and lower boundaries of the option price and to the values implied by commonly used option valuation methods in order to determine whether the employee stock options are mispriced in the market. The observed pricing errors are analyzed with linear regression models using parameters from commonly used option pricing models as well as other variables related to employee stock options as dependent variables. The study finds that the prices of the employee stock options are lower than predicted by option-pricing theory. More importantly, most of the trades are found to violate the theoretical lower boundaries for the option prices. These results imply that the markets systematically undervalue the employee stock options. The regression analysis shows that the degree of undervaluation for an employee stock option is lower (1) when daily trading volume of the option is high, (2) when the moneyness of the option is high, (3) and when the market value of an individual trade is high. On the other hand, the degree of undervaluation is found to be higher (1) when the maturity of the option is long, (2) when the trade occurs within ten days from the listing of the stock option, (3) and when the issuer of the employee stock option has published an interim report within the preceding ten days. The results of this thesis are consistent with those of earlier empirical studies. Furthermore, the consistent undervaluation of the employee stock options and the higher undervaluation subsequent to their listing and after the publishing of interim reports are also consistent with earlier theoretical findings. |
Abstract (fin): | Henkilöstöoptiot ovat yleistyneet Suomessa nopeasti. Suomessa on listattu ainoana maana maailmassa henkilöstöoptiot pörssiin. Tästä on seurannut ainutlaatuinen tilaisuus tutkia henkilöstöoptioiden jälkimarkkinahinnoittelua. |
