Abstract (eng): As the percentage of old people in Finland grows due to the retiring of "large age groups", an increasing amount of labour is required in the field of geriatrics.
One solution to ease the work of the nurses could be utilizing contactles vital function monitoring.
This can be implemented in several ways including acceleration sensors, force sensors and even radar.

In this paper, a small self-contained ballistocardiographic (BCG) system with onboard force sensor, analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and USB connection is presented.
The objective was to design a device that can be installed inside different enclosures to reliably measure the vital functions of a person in different situations.
The primary goal was a sensor plate that can be placed under the mattress in a hospital bed.
A secondary goal was a small aluminium sensor box to be placed under a chair leg to demonstrate the technology in office surroundings.

The design target were met commendably.
Using the device, the vital functions of the person in a bed or a chair can be monitored without the need of connecting any wires or other systems to the person.
The noise level is small enough to allow measuring of even the weakest heart beast.
As the importance of different features was unclear prior to beginning of this study, the device was designed with ability to evaluate several different features.
However, after building prototypes and testing them in real condition, some of the features were found to be useless.
Thus, in the future development the device can be designed less complex and more affordable by omitting unnecessary circuitry.
Abstract (fin): Väestön ikääntyessä vanhustenhoito vaatii lisää työvoimaa.
Työtä voidaisiin mahdollisesti helpottaa automatisoimalla joitain rutiininomaiseen terveydentilan valvontaan liittyviä asioita.
Yksi mahdollisuus on henkilön tilan tarkkailu ballistokardiografian menetelmin.
