Reading digital theses in the closed network of the Aalto University Harald Herlin Learning Centre

You can read theses on the Learning Centre customer computers, which are available on all floors.

Logging on to the customer computers

  • Aalto University staff members log on to the customer computer using the Aalto username and password.
  • Other customers log on using a shared username and password.

Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

    Aalto Thesis Database

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng): A great number of initiatives, ranging from projects run by dedicated individuals to non-governmental organizations and foundations, aim to alleviate poverty prevailing throughout developing countries.
However, despite the decades of delivering development assistance, the results are commonly considered unsatisfactory.
One of the key challenges is that the myriad of entities involved in development, and fragmentation in their projects, make managing and coordinating aid extremely difficult.
This leads to wasting of the development resources through duplicated efforts and overlapping activities.

Not only is the coordination among the multitude of independent actors very difficult, but so is also accessing even the most basic information about their different projects. , Through a literature review and interviews from Finland and Nigeria, this thesis demonstrates how this lack of awareness hampers the effectiveness of private development assistance.
Without holistic understanding of the delivered assistance, aid organizations cannot position their efforts in relation to others, and without knowledge of relevant others, they miss out synergies.

Furthermore, this thesis proposes a practical solution of how the global development efforts could be made more effective through the novel application of social media technologies.
In addition to presenting six design features of a social media website for global knowledge sharing, its possible implementation is assessed.

This thesis addresses a gap in existing research and among current initiatives.
It deepens understanding of the causes behind inefficiencies in private development assistance, and contributes in a practical way to the important aim of making private development assistance more effective.
Abstract (fin): Monien maiden elinolosuhteet ovat kansainvälisillä mittareilla arvotettuina puutteellisia.
Tavoite edistää inhimillistä kehitystä näissä maailmankolkissa on innoittanut lukuisia hyväntekijöitä, järjestöjä ja säätiöitä.
Vuosikymmeniä jatkuneen kehitysyhteistyön tuloksia pidetään kuitenkin riittämättöminä.
Yksi haasteista on monilukuinen ja kirjava toimijajoukko: eri toimijoiden pirstaleisten projektien hallitseminen järkevän kokonaisuuden kannalta on hyvin hankalaa.
Koordinoinnin puute johtaa päällekkäisiin projekteihin ja siten resurssien haaskaukseen.

Nykytilanteessa perustiedon hankkiminen eri kehitysyhteistyötoimijoista on hyvin vaikeaa.
Tämä diplomityö osoittaa poikkitieteellisen kirjallisuuskatsauksen sekä Suomessa ja Nigeriassa tehtyjen haastatteluiden perusteella, että tiedon puute muista toimijoista heikentää yksityisten toimijoiden kehitysavun tuloksellisuutta.
Ilman kokonaiskuvaa annetusta kehitysavusta toimijat eivät voi suunnata toimintojaan kokonaisuuden kannalta järkevästi, ja ilman ymmärrystä muista toimijoista menetetään synergioita.

Laajan teoriataustan lisäksi tämä diplomityö esittää, kuinka tuloksellisuutta voisi edistää sosiaalisen median sovelluksen avulla.
Sovelluksen kuusi suunnitteluperiaatetta esitellään, sekä sen toteuttamismahdollisuuksia arvioidaan.

Tämä diplomityö tarkastelee kehitysyhteistyötä näkökulmasta, josta on heikosti aiempaa tutkimustietoa, ja johon liittyviä sosiaalisen median sovelluksia on vähän.
Työ syventää ymmärrystä yksityisen kehitysavun tuloksellisuudesta, ja esittää konkreettisen ehdotuksen, kuinka kehitysavun tuloksellisuutta voisi edistää.
