Logging on to the customer computers

  • Aalto University staff members log on to the customer computer using the Aalto username and password.
  • Other customers log on using a shared username and password.

Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

    Aalto Thesis Database

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng): The main goal of the study was to investigate and compare Wärtsilä's competence management actions to academic literature and to develop suggestions and guidelines for Wärtsilä's use according to findings.
Based on the literature analysis, hypothesis was set as following: Competence management has positive correlation with successfulness of research and development project.
To test the hypothesis and to collect data of Wärtsilä's competence management, case study with survey was carried out.

Academic literature on competence management is incoherent.
Terms are used with various meanings and no overarching theory exists.
Unifying theme however is, that competences regardless of the definition are seen as a core enabler of above average performance in technology industry.

Case study revealed that Wärtsilä has established processes for managing competences.
Key findings however were that processes were dispersed, organization was not structured to support competence management as well as it could have and employees understanding of the benefits were poor due to insufficient implementation.

Survey results indicated that hypothesis is true, but due to small amount of survey responders and very minor correlation slope the hypothesis would need further investigation to ensure it.
Abstract (fin): Työn tavoitteena oli tutkia ja vertailla Wärtsilän osaamisen johtamistoimia akateemiseen kirjallisuuteen ja vertailun johtopaatoksien perusteella kehittää ohjeistus Wärtsilän käyttöön.

Pohjautuen kirjallisuuskatsaukseen työn hypoteesiksi asetettiin: Osaamisen johtaminen korreloi positiivisesti tutkimus ja kehitys projektien onnistuneisuuden kanssa.
Hypoteesin testaamiseksi, sekä Wärtsilän osaamisen johtamistoimien arvioimiseksi toteutettiin tapaustutkimus Wärtsilästä sisältäen osaamisen johtamis-kyselyn.

Akateeminen kirjallisuus osaamisen johtamisesta on hajanaista.
Termejä käytetään eri merkityksissä eikä kokonaisvaltaista osaamisen johtamis- teoriaa ole.
Yhtenäisenä teemana kuitenkin on huomioitava, että ydinosaaminen, määrittelystä huolimatta, nähdään keskiarvoa paremman suorituskyvyn mahdollistajana teknologiateollisuudessa.

Wärtsilän tapaustutkimus paljasti, että Wärtsilällä on prosessit osaamisen johtamiseen.
Prosessit olivat kuitenkin hajallaan, organisaatio ei pystynyt tukemaan osaamisenjohtamista parhaalla mahdollisella tavalla ja työntekijöiden ymmärrys osaamisen johtamisen hyödyistä oli heikkoa joten prosessien käytäntöön viemisessä oli parannettavaa.

Kyselyn tulokset osoittivat hypoteesin todeksi, mutta johtuen pienestä otoksesta sekä matalasta korrelaation kulmakertoimesta lisätutkimuksia tarvittaisiin hypoteesin varmistamiseksi.
