Reading digital theses in the closed network of the Aalto University Harald Herlin Learning Centre

You can read theses on the Learning Centre customer computers, which are available on all floors.

Logging on to the customer computers

  • Aalto University staff members log on to the customer computer using the Aalto username and password.
  • Other customers log on using a shared username and password.

Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

    Aalto Thesis Database

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng): This master's thesis is related to a project, the target of which is to develop network services following the principles of participatory design.
In participatory design users are contributing actively in the whole design process and treated like designers.
The research focuses on a daylong ideation and focus group workshop held with users.
The aim of this thesis was to evaluate the relationship between the emotional state and the workshop results.
The focus of this thesis is therefore the possibility to measure quality of participatory design methods by emotional states.

During the workshop data was collected of the participants' emotional state.
The performance of the participatory design methods, ideation and focus group, were evaluated participant-specific by the amount, goodness and variety.
The performances of the participatory design methods compared to the emotional states formed the results.

As a result of the research was that the participant-specific performances of the participatory design methods, especially in focus group, varied widely.
Comparing both emotional state data with different participants and emotional state data of each individual, it turned out that there were hardly any variations in the emotional states during the workshop.
On the strength of the results there were no relationship between emotional state and the performance of the participatory design methods.
Abstract (fin): Tämä diplomityö liittyy projektiin, jossa kehitetään verkkopalvelua osallistavan suunnittelun periaatteiden mukaisesti.
Osallistavassa suunnittelussa käyttäjät ovat aktiivisesti mukana koko suunnitteluprosessissa ja heitä kohdellaan kuin suunnittelijoita.
Tutkimus kohdistui käyttäjien kanssa pidettävään päivän mittaiseen ideointi- ja ryhmäkeskustelutyöpajaan.
Diplomityön tavoitteena oli selvittää löytyykö tunnetilan ja työpajan tuloksien välillä yhteyttä.
Keskeisenä tutkimuskysymyksenä on, voidaanko osallistuvassa suunnittelussa käytettyjen työkalujen laatua mitata tunnetilan kautta.

Työpajan aikana kerättiin tasaisin aikavälein tietoa osallistujien tunnetilasta.
Osallistavan suunnittelun työkalujen, ideoinnin ja ryhmäkeskustelun osallistuja-kohtaisia suorituksia arvioitiin määrän, hyvyyden ja vaihtelevuuden avulla.
Tulokset muodostettiin vertailemalla osallistavan suunnittelun työkalujen suorituksia kirjattuun tunnetilaan.

Tutkimuksessa saatiin selville, että osallistavan suunnittelun työkalun suoriutumiset, etenkin ryhmäkeskustelussa, vaihtelivat henkilötasolla paljon.
Vertailemalla sekä osallistujien välisiä tunnetilan kirjauksia että henkilöiden yksittäisiä kirjauksia keskenään selvisi, että tunnetilat vaihtelivat päivän aikana melko vähän.
Tuloksien perusteella tutkimuksessa ei löydetty yhteyttä tunnetilan ja osallistavan suunnittelun työkalujen suoriutumisen välille.
