Abstract (eng): The aim of this study was to elucidate if phenolic extracts from Finnish berries can be used in products for surface disinfecting and cleaning of products such as e.g. mobile phones and keyboards.
In this work the antimicrobial properties of extracts from Finnish berries, mainly cloudberry were studied.
The study was based on previous publications on berry phenolics and their antimicrobial properties as well as an experimental setup for the purpose of investigating the antimicrobial properties of selected Finnish berries.

The results indicated that the phenolic extract of c10udberry possess good antimicrobial qualities against certain species of the bacteria Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.
In test tubes the extract was effective in 0,5 % (w/v) saline dilutions and with surfactants a 0,05 % concentration was still effective.
The tests also showed good results when applied on plastic and glass surfaces with a disposable wipe.
The antimicrobial properties did not persist during storage, although the pH of the solution was found to be stable.

In this study the product development process from a start-up point of view was also examined.
Phenolic extract from c10udberry was found to have enough desired properties for a disinfectant and it is justified to continue with the product development.
However issues as availability of the berry-material for commercial use and the effects of the supply on the final price of the product still needs to be carefully analysed.
Abstract (fin): Tämän työn tavoitteena oli selvittää suomalaisten marjojen fenoliuutteiden hyödyntämistä ja soveltuvuutta erilaisten pintojen puhdistukseen tarkoitetuissa desinfektioaineissa.
Eräänä käyttökohteena voisivat olla puhelimet sekä näppäimistöt.
Kokeissa on tutkittu suomalaisista marjoista eristettyjen uutteiden, pääasiassa lakkauutteen, antimikrobisia ominaisuuksia.
