Abstract (eng): | The purpose of this study was to clarify challenges and requirements for certifying industrial gear units and their accessories for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. In addition, the process how to obtain specific certificates for gear units and their accessories in potentially explosive atmospheres is clarified. This study identifies the necessary actions to be taken in each step of the process form customer order to delivery. Ignition and explosion mechanisms of flammable dusts and gases are discussed. Causes leading to explosive atmospheres and ignition sources are studied. Requirements for certifying gear units and their accessories in potentially explosive atmospheres were reviewed. The essential requirements regarding use of equipment in explosive atmospheres were discussed from a geographical, application specific and explosion certificate specific viewpoint. Discoveries in this study showed that much effort needs to be put into drawing up technical documentations which are mandatory in certification processes. The whole power transmission solution, including those accessories included, need to conform to relevant requirements. Modifications in equipment design will be necessary to assure sufficient level of safety against particular hazards. In this study an example product (XO110) was used to illustrate how the practical aspects of the certification processes are carried out in ATEX. |
