Abstract (eng): Mobile network utilisation has experienced a significant paradigm shift, as mobile packet switched data traffic has exceeded traditional circuit switched voice.
As data traffic is expected to continue growing exponentially, mobile network operators need to focus effort on maximising the benefit from their network capacity.
This thesis attempts to identify possible means of optimising 3G mobile networks for smartphone data users.
The focus is on improving the quality of service experienced by the users by recommending specific optimisation methods, consisting of feature activation and radio resource parameter configuration.

The optimisation recommendations were developed by evaluating various feature improvements, introduced to 3G networks with High Speed Packet Access updates.
Analysed features improve data access latency, user data throughput and smartphone battery lifetime.
Each feature aims to solve a specific problem with mobile data access.
Different combinations of features may improve the overall quality of service substantially.
It was concluded that a trade-off between battery lifetime and data access latency or throughput is unavoidable.
Abstract (fin): Langattomien puhelinverkkojen käyttötarkoitus on kokenut merkittävän muutoksen, kun pakettidataliikenne on ylittänyt määrässä perinteisen puhe1uliikenteen.
Dataliikenteen uskotaan jatkavan eksponentiaalista kasvuaan, minkä takia mobiiliverkko-operaattorien on kohdistettava voimavaroja verkkokapasiteetista saatavan hyödyn maksimointiin.
Tässä diplomityössä pyritään tunnistamaan mahdollisia keinoja optimoida 3G-verkkoa älypuhelinkäyttäjien datatarpeisiin.
Tavoitteena on parantaa käyttäjien kokemaa palvelunlaatua erityisillä optimointimenetelmillä, kuten ottamalla käyttöön uusia ominaisuuksia ja säätämällä radioresurssiparametreja.

Optimointiehdotukset kehitettiin arvioimalla erinäisiä paranneltuja ominaisuuksia, joita on otettu käyttöön 3G-verkoissa HSPA päivitysten myötä.
Tutkitut ominaisuudet kehittävät datayhteyden avausviivettä, datanopeutta ja älypuhelimen akunkestoa.
Kukin ominaisuus pyrkii ratkaisemaan tietyn mobiilidatayhteyteen liittyvän ongelman.
Ominaisuuksia yhdistämällä voidaan merkittävästi parantaa palvelunlaatua kokonaisuutena.
Optimoinnissa ei voida välttää kompromissia akunkeston ja datayhteyden avausviiveen tai nopeuden välillä.
