Abstract (eng): | This is the Master's thesis of Anna Oikarinen, Helsinki University of Technology. The goal of the study is to discover through using user studies in paper mills, how ABB's Web Inspection Solution (WIS) could be integrated into other system(s). The idea is to gather information on the ideas and needs of the user groups including operators, production management, laboratory, automation, maintenance and technological department. The user studies are conducted in four countries: Finland, Spain, Indonesia and China. As the cultures of these locations differ, in addition to the theories of roles of the process control systems by Paunonen as well as integration theories of Hemilä and Tähtinen, the cultural dimensions theory of Hofstede is used for preparation and analysis phases. The different levels of integration in this study were hardware, application functional meaning the user interface (UI) level integration and application technology meaning information integration. The user groups were formed according to the way of usage, and the system roles rather than the current title, meaning that the responsibility areas and tasks defined of the user groups. The seven roles of process control systems used include process monitoring, task support for predefined tasks, disturbance control and diagnosis tool, information exchange, knowledge handling, learning, and performance development. The research question of this map the current situation regarding integration in the paper mills: what is the current level integration in the paper mills, and whether there are differences on this between the countries, what are the user groups of WJS and the roles of the different process control systems from the viewpoint of WIS users. Additionally, what are the should be and could-be situations: what are the roles in which WIS could be used, what are the systems to which WIS could be integrated, and what the levels of integration for the different users would be. Finally, the effect of culture is discussed: cultural effects on the tasks in the paper mills, the effect of culture on conducting a user study, and the effect of culture on analyzing results. As a result, it was discovered that the most interesting user groups for the integration include production management, and customer service that was not even listed as WIS user. Operators that were thought to be the possible target group did not in fact have any interest or need for the integration. The lessons learned include also the importance of the understanding of cultural differences when conducting user studies both in preparation phase and analysis phase. |
Abstract (fin): | Tämä on Teknillisessä korkeakoulussa tehty Anna Oikarinen diplomityö. |
