Reading digital theses in the closed network of the Aalto University Harald Herlin Learning Centre

You can read theses on the Learning Centre customer computers, which are available on all floors.

Logging on to the customer computers

  • Aalto University staff members log on to the customer computer using the Aalto username and password.
  • Other customers log on using a shared username and password.

Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

    Aalto Thesis Database

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng):Increased urbanisation together with the rapid increase of consumption continues to draw attention to the sustainability of urban environments which are developed according to requirements of human well-being.
Development of living environments at the pace of increasing urbanisation, where value is created in the form of good life quality and sustainability, is undoubtedly a challenging task for governments and municipalities.
Creating human well-being through sustainable urban development sets high requirements on the process between public and private, which is commonly seen as highly complex due to multiple actors involved.
The aim of this research was to create a better understanding of the challenges in mutual target setting and shared value creation between the stakeholders in an urban development process.
Whether these difficulties could be solved through using a novel sustainability management concept, One Planet Living, was investigated in the case study of Kivistö regional city centre development.
The study comprised a literature review, interviews and a workshop.
The literature review investigated current value drivers for stakeholder businesses included in the case development.
Business trends reflect customer demand and are mirrored in stakeholder business motives in the development project as value drivers and targets.
These targets were examined through interviews reflecting business specific targets for the project on the suggested sustainability framework.
A first step towards shared target optimisation was taken in a sustainability workshop.

Results show that a multifold case characterised by consolidation of multiple targets and existing stakeholder sustainability programs requires management of sustainability to reduce the risk of a sustainability fall-out during the process of development.
The application of One Planet Living is suggested due to its tendency to manage the creation of shared value and sustainability through optimizing conventional business targets.
Abstract (fin):Kaupungistuminen ja kulutuksen kasvu ovat lisänneet kestävän kehityksen merkitystä asuinympäristöjen rakentamisessa.
Kaupunkiympäristön sosiaalinen, taloudellinen ja ekologinen kestävyys ovat tärkeitä kriteereitä, joilla pyritään takaamaan asukkaiden hyvinvointi sekä hyvän elämän edellytykset, ja siksi niihin kiinnitetään kaupunkisuunnittelussa entistä enemmän huomiota.
Kestävän kehityksen vaatimukset sekä kiihtyvä kaupungistuminen ja näiden väliset ristiriidat asettavat suuria haasteita kunnille, jotka ovat päävastuussa uusien elinympäristöjen luomisesta yhteistyössä yksityisen sektorin kanssa.
Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli lisätä ymmärrystä kestävään kaupunkikehitysprosessiin liittyvän yhteistyön haasteista, joiden väitetään aiheutuvan yhteistyötoimijoiden tavoitteiden eroavaisuuksista.
Uudella One Planet Living -nimisellä kestävän elämäntavan konseptilla pyritään välttämään yhteistyöhön liittyvien ongelmien syntymistä.
One Planet Living-konseptin soveltumista kaupunkikehitysprosessin jaettujen arvojen ja tavoitteiden muodostamiseen tutkittiin tutustumalla Kivistön aluekeskuksen kehittämishankkeeseen.
Tutkimuksessa perehdyttiin yhteistyön haasteisiin ja niiden ratkaisemiseen kirjallisuuskatsauksen, haastatteluiden ja työpajan avulla.
Kirjallisuuskatsauksessa tarkasteltiin yhteistyötoimijoiden liiketoimintaa ohjaavia arvoja ja sitä, miten ne ohjaavat Kivistön kehittämishanketta.
Liiketoiminnan trendit havainnollistavat kysyntää sekä asiakkaiden tahtotilaa ja näkyvät yhteistyötoimijoiden liiketoimintaa ohjaavina tekijöinä ja kehittämishankkeessa tavoitteina.
Näitä tavoitteita tutkittiin edelleen haastatteluissa, joissa toimijoita pyydettiin peilaamaan hankekohtaisia tavoitteita ehdotettuun One Planet Living -konseptiin.
Lisäksi jaettua arvoa haettiin kestävän kehityksen työpajassa.
Työn tärkeimmistä tuloksista käy ilmi, että laaja ja monimutkainen kaupunkikehitysprosessi vaatii ohjaamista ennaltaehkäisemään kestävän kehityksen ratkaisujen poisjäämistä prosessin aikana.
One Planet Living -konsepti soveltunee kaupunkikehitykseen, sillä se ohjaa kestävän kehityksen tavoitteiden toteutumista jaetun arvonluonnin kautta sekä mahdollistaa perinteisten liiketoiminnallisten tavoitteiden optimoinnin.
