Abstract (eng): The purpose of this research was to investigate the formation of the surface mark that occurs during roll grinding.
The aim was to find out what factors in the grinding process affect to the surface mark.
Roll grinding requires extremely high standards of accuracy, because when the rolls are m operation, even small errors in the dimensional accuracy might cause problems.
The surface mark examined here is more of an optical surface quality error than a dimensional error in the roll.

The hypothesis was that it is a grinding vibration based problem, which is a usual reason for similar surface marks.
In the literature study, grinding surface mark related literature and basic theory for grinding chatter are presented.
In experimental section, research methods and equipments are presented.
Laboratory tests were carried out using the roll grinder m the Laboratory of the Department of Engineering Design and Production in the Helsinki University of Technology.
The study consisted of vibration measurement and analysis m different grinding conditions and other tests with grinding equipments.
The principle was to measure the vibrations occurring during the grinding and to find out what factors in the grinding process affect to the formation of the surface mark.

As a result of the study, the formation mechanism of the surface mark could not be found.
Thus the main objective of this research was not achieved.
However, as a result of the experiments, much information was obtained on the matters which have no effect to the surface mark.
Abstract (fin): Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin telan pintaan hionnassa syntyvää hiontajälkeä.
Tavoitteena oli löytää hiomajäljen syntymekanismi ja selvittää millä hiomaprosessin osatekijöillä on vaikutusta jäljen syntymiseen.
Telahionnassa on erittäin suuret tarkkuusvaatimukset, koska telojen ollessa käytössä pienetkin virheet mittatarkkuudessa aiheuttavat ongelmia.
Tutkittava hiomajälki on enemmänkin optinen pinnanlaatuvirhe kuin mitattavissa oleva telan geometriavirhe.

Lähtöoletuksena oli, että kyseessä on hiontavärähtelyyn liittyvä ongelma, mikä on tavallinen syy vastaavien hiomajälkien esiintymiseen.
Kirjallisuusosassa on selvitetty telahiontaan ja hiomavärähtelyyn liittyviä perusasioita ja etsitty vastaaviin hiontajälkiin liittyviä tutkimuksia.
Kokeellisessa osuudessa on esitetty käytettävät laitteistot ja tutkimusmenetelmät.
Kokeellinen tutkimus tehtiin Teknillisen korkeakoulun koneenrakennustekniikan laitoksen telahiomakoneella.
