Abstract (eng): A test bed for measuring different performance characteristics of amperometric neurotransmitter sensors was designed and implemented for this Master's thesis.

This thesis is a part of a research project that's being undertaken in the Department of Electronics of Aalto University School of Electrical Engineering and which aims to develop implantable neurotransmitter sensors.

The first part of the thesis consists of a literary survey that presents the necessary theoretical background for electrochemical measurements and specifically the operating principle of selective neurotransmitter sensors, focusing on the ones designed to detect glutamate.
Also included is a treatment of fluid dynamics and hydrodynamic systems for electrochemical measurements.

The experimental section presents the measurement system that was designed and manufactured based on the requirements set by the results obtained from the literary survey.
Commercial glutamate sensors manufactured by Sarissa Biomedical were used to test the performance of the designed system.

The reliability of the commercial biosensors proved to be an issue during the measurements and only one of the sensors provided useful information.
This greatly limits the reliability of deductions made from the sensor measurements but nonetheless the system was able to measure central characteristics of the sensor including its time resolution and sensitivity.
The results also indicate the system can be used to perform very fast measurements.
Abstract (fin): Tässä diplomityössä rakennettiin laitteisto, jolla kyetään määrittämään ja mittaamaan amperometrisen välittäjäaineanturin suorituskykyä kuvaavia parametreja.
Työ on osa Aalto-yliopiston Sähkötekniikan korkeakoulun Elektroniikan laitoksen tutkimusprojektia, jonka yksi osa-alue on valmistaa aivostimulaatiossa käytettäviä implantoitavia välittäjäaineantureita.
Toteutettu laitteisto on tarkoitettu näiden antureiden testaamiseen.

Lisäksi tulosten perusteella laitteisto kykeni nopeiden mittausten suorittamiseen.
