Abstract (eng): | Among all renewable energy sources the photovoltaic (PV) energy shows the fastest growth in the last years. The growing threat of global warming forces most governments in the world to offer incentives that stimulate the growth in this relatively new renewable energy technology. This thesis describes the operation and main elements of a modern grid-connected PV system. The main focus is on the power electronic converter topologies, but in order to understand the issues affecting these topologies, it is necessary to know the basics of solar cells and panels, as well as the need to interconnect them in PV arrays. Power electronic converters are necessary to process the energy from the PV panels and deliver it to the grid from where it is distributed to the end consumers of electrical energy. Different PV system configurations are discussed, such as, the central inverter, string and multi-string inverter, and module-integrated inverter. Within these configurations many converter topologies are presented. The choice of PV system configuration affects every element of the system and the available solutions. For example, which converter topology is most suitable, at which stage the maximum power point tracking controller should be installed, the need of galvanic isolation, the total efficiency of the system, the amount of energy that can be harvested from the sun, etc. Special attention was paid to three of the technical issues: the grid standards, the islanding problem, and the ground current. The ground current issue was studied by performing simulations with some of the most popular converter topologies. The results show that the ground current is not an issue for systems with isolation transformer and some of the transformer less topologies when properly controlled. |
Abstract (fin): | Viime vuosina aurinkopaneeleilla tuotettu energia on ollut nopeimmin kasvava uusiutuvan energian muoto. Vuotovirtaongelmaa tutkittiin simuloimalla suosituimpia vaihtosuuntaajatopologioita. |
