Abstract (eng): A low-height noise barrier can be used as noise mitigation measure for railway traffic.
A low-height noise barrier is located near the rail and its height from the top of the rail is 85 cm.
The barrier attenuates especially the rolling noise radiated by the connection between the wheels and the rail.
Low-height noise barriers differ in placement and landscape impacts from generally used sound walls.
In Finland, low-height noise barriers have only been built for test use so far.

The aim of this study was to find out if the attenuation of noise by the low-height noise barriers can be evaluated by noise modeling software that is based on the Nordic prediction methodology for railway noise.
The study was conducted by measuring the noise attenuation in a field experiments and by modeling the installed low-height barrier with Datakustik CadnaA noise modeling software.
The applicability of the software was evaluated by comparing the results obtained from the software to those obtained from the field measurements.

The field measurements demonstrated that a low-height noise barrier reduced the noise levels about 5,5 to 12 dB in measurement points according to the standard SFS-EN ISO 3095.
However, the noise modeling software predicted only 3 to 5,5 dB noise reduction.

Based on this study, the modeling software with Nordic prediction methodology for the railway noise cannot be applied for the evaluation of the low-height noise barriers' attenuation.
The reason is that the low-height barrier is located closer to the rail than a typical acoustic barrier, for which the software has been developed.
More reliable results for the attenuation of noise by the low-height noise barriers can be obtained via field measurements.
Abstract (fin): Matalalla meluesteellä tarkoitetaan lähellä raidetta sijaitsevaa meluestettä, jonka korkeus kiskon selästä on 85 cm.

Laskentaohjelman soveltuvuutta arvioitiin vertaamalla laskentaohjelman antamia tuloksia kenttämittauksissa saatuihin tuloksiin.

Kenttämittausten perusteella matala melueste oli toimiva meluntorjuntaratkaisu, koska se alensi melutasoja standardin SFS-EN ISO 3095 mukaisissa tarkastelupisteissä noin 5,5 - 12 dB.
Kun kenttämittausten tuloksia verrattiin laskentaohjelman tuloksiin, huomattiin melunlaskentaohjelmalla saatujen vaimennuksen arvojen olleen vain 3-5,5 dB.
Tämän tutkimuksen tulosten perusteella pohjoismaiseen raidemelun laskentamalliin perustuva laskentaohjelma ei sovellu sellaisenaan matalan meluesteen vaimennuskyvyn arviointiin, koska matala este sijaitsee lähempänä raidetta kuin tavallisesti käytetty meluaita.
Luotettavimmin matalan meluesteen vaimennuskyky voidaan selvittää kenttämittauksilla.
