Abstract (eng): | Ballistocardiography (BCG) is a method used to observe mechanical forces in the body caused by the heart and the blood circulation. It enables the monitoring of the heart as well as the estimation of the stroke volume and the physical condition by a non-invasive measurement. Utilizing the ballistocardiography efficiently requires regularly repeated measurements which are facilitated by compact devices developed for home use. A compact BCG measuring device can for instance be designed by integrating accelerometers in personal scales. In this setup the accelerometers measure physical forces coupled to the scales from the body of the user. Ballistocardiographic forces are weak and hence the accuracy of the accelerometers used must be high. This Master's thesis examines the capability of the capacitive MEMS accelerometers produced by VTI Technologies Oy to perform ballistocardiographic measurements on personal scales. A measuring system was compiled by attaching accelerometers to an ordinary personal scale allowing the registration of the BCG signal of a person standing on it. To develop the device, different types of scales and different accelerometer attachment alternatives were compared to evaluate their influence on the performance of the measuring system. The completed device was tested by performing measurements on test persons to identify the reliability of the heart rate measurement and the assessment of the physical condition. Based on the results, VTI's accelerometers were characterized as adequate to accomplish ballistocardiographic measurements in a standing position on personal scales. |
Abstract (fin): | Ballistokardiografia (BKG) on mittausmenetelmä, jolla havaitaan sydämen ja verenkiertoelimistön aiheuttamia mekaanisia voimia kehossa. Yksi vaihtoehto kompaktin BKG-mittalaitteen kehittämiseen on henkilövaakaan integroitu kiihtyvyysanturi, jolla voidaan mitata vaa'an päällä seisovan käyttäjän kehosta vaakaan kytkeytyviä mekaanisia voimia. Ballistokardiografiset voimat ovat heikkoja, joten niiden erottamiseen tarvitaan herkkiä antureita. Tässä diplomityössä selvitettiin eräiden VTI Technologies Oy:n kapasitiivisten MEMS-kiihtyvyysanturien soveltuvuutta henkilövaa'alla suoritettaviin ballistokardiografisiin mittauksiin. Työssä kehitettiin tavalliseen henkilövaakaan ja siihen kiinnitettyihin kiihtyvyysantureihin perustuva mittalaitteisto, jolla voidaan rekisteröidä vaa'alla seisovan henkilön ballistokardiografista signaalia. Laitteistoa kehitettäessä verrattiin erilaisten vaakatyyppien ja anturin kiinnitysratkaisujen vaikutusta laitteiston suorituskykyyn. Valmista laitteistoa testattiin koehenkilöillä suoritetuilla mittauksilla, joissa selvitettiin ballistokardiografiaan perustuvan sykemittauksen ja fyysisen kunnon määrityksen luotettavuutta. Tulosten perusteella voitiin arvioida VTI:n kiihtyvyysanturien suorituskyvyn riittävän ballistokardiografisten mittausten tekemiseen henkilövaa'alla seisovalta henkilöltä. |
