Abstract (eng): | The focus of this work was in the adhesion phenomenon of DLC and parameters affect-ing it in a bioelectrode application. New kinds of bioelectrodes are needed e.g. in neu-rotransmitter measurements. DLC has some unique properties, like good corrosion resistance, it is biocompatible and it has a wide water window, which enable fabrication of feasible bioelectrodes. However, DLC suffers from poor adhesion on several substrate materials. In this work, adhesion of DLC to platinum-iridium microwire and silicon, which was used as a reference material, was investigated. Parameters between the structure and the adhesion of DLC were investigated. DLC was deposited on silicon pieces, cut out from wafers and on platinum-iridium microwire by using cathodic arc deposition process. Adhesion was promoted by pretreatments, by using a titanium interlayer and by vacuum annealing after the deposition. The structure and surface of DLC was investigated with scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray reflection spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, Sessile drop method and atomic force microscopy. The adhesion of DLC was investigated with nanoindentation method, fluid immersion testing and by analyzing the performance of fabricated electrodes in cyclic voltammetry measurements. DLC coatings were uniform, smooth and of supposed thickness, but the titanium interlayer was thinner than expected. It was also noticed that there was oxygen present in vacuum chamber during deposition. Titanium interlayer promoted the adhesion in cyclic voltammetry measurements. Vacuum annealing weakened the adhesion in nanoindentation measurements. |
Abstract (fin): | Työssä tutkittiin timantinkaltaisen hiilen (DLC) rakenteen ja adheesion välistä yhteyttä kahdella eri alusmateriaalilla. Uudenlaisten bioelektrodien tarve lisääntyy mm. hermovälittäjäainemittauskäytössä. Monet DLC:n ominaisuuksista, kuten hyvä korroosionkesto, bioyhteensopivuus ja laaja vesi-ikkuna mahdollistavat entistä parempien bioelektrodien valmistamisen. DLC:llä on kuitenkin havaittu adheesioongelmia monilla eri alusmateriaaleilla. |
