| Abstract (eng): | Helsinki Deaconess Institute is located in the Kallio district in Helsinki. The institute was founded in 1867. On its present location it has been since year 1897. The aim of the deaconess movement was to help those lacking the means to support themselves or having fallen outside society's or community's safety networks. It also provided hospital services on Christian principles. Until 1950s the deaconesses were housed in a communal sister home and they received only pocket money for their work. Today the Deaconess institute is a charitable foundation which provides a wide variety of social and health care services in Helsinki and its surroundings. Constant planning and building development is characteristic of the Deaconess Institute throughout its history. In 2008 architect Juha Leiviskä completed plans for an overall development of the original location on which the institute and its many buildings are situated, starting with 130 individual homes for the homeless. There is a shift in emphasis towards the original use of this particular site, housing. The problems within the area of the Deaconess Institute involve heavy traffic and large-scale parking. In the future parking will be directed underground and all maintenance traffic will be directed outside the courtyard; only emergency vehicles will be allowed in the courtyard, and remaining parking slots will be limited to invalid parking. A change in activities and the ongoing architectural planning will create possibilities in landscape design. There is need for the rearrangement of the existing courtyard. The aim is to create a restorative environment for the many people living and working in the area. A general plan will act as a framework for further, more detailed designs which will be realised according to the timetable of the building development. The many old and valuable trees are listed and protected. The courtyard will be a green oasis for the people in the area: the inhabitants of the homes, the students, hospital patients and the people employed in the various companies in the area. The concept of restorative environment is defined by the environment's esthetical qualities, safety, versatility, accessibility, and a sense of communality intertwined with privacy. The solutions and designs are based on theories of restorative environment and profiles of both users and activities. |
| Abstract (fin): | Helsingin Diakonissalaitoksen kortteli sijaitsee Helsingissä Kallion kaupunginosassa. Helsingin Diakonissalaitos perustettiin vuonna 1867. Nykyisellä paikallaan Diakonissalaitos on ollut vuodesta 1897. Diakonissalaitosten toiminnan lähtökohtana on ollut vähäosaisten ja syrjäytyneiden auttaminen sekä sairaalatoiminta kristillisessä hengessä. 1950-luvulle saakka diakonissojen koulutus perustui ns. sisarkotijärjestelmään, jolloin diakonissat ja siksi aikovat asuivat Diakonissalaitoksen alueella. Helsingin Diakonissalaitos on nykyisin yleishyödyllinen säätiö, joka tarjoaa monipuolista sosiaali- ja terveydenhoidon palveluja ja koulutusta ympäri pääkaupunkiseutua. Rakennustoiminta Diakonissalaitoksen korttelissa on pysynyt vilkkaana koko laitoksen olemassa olon ajan. Arkkitehti Juha Leiviskä on tehnyt vuonna 2008 alueelle uuden rakentamisen kokonaissuunnitelman. Ensi vaiheessa on alueelle valmistumassa 130 tukiasuntoa syrjäytyneille. Diakonissalaitoksen korttelissa toiminnan painopiste tule olemaan jälleen asumisessa. Piha-alueiden ongelmana on tällä hetkellä vilkas ajoneuvoliikenne ja pysäköintipaikat. Tarkoitus on siirtää pysäköintipaikat korttelin pihalta; maanalaiseen pysäköintihalliin. Korttelin huoltoliikenne siirtyy pois pihalta. Tulevaisuudessa pihalla liikennöivät vain hälytysajoneuvot ja pihan parkkipaikat ovat liikuntarajoitteisia varten. Toimintaympäristöjen muutokset tuovat uusia mahdollisuuksia järjestää pihatilat. Rakentamisen kokonaissuunnitelman ohella on tullut tarve tehdä pihaan yleissuunnitelma. Suunnitelman päätavoitteena ja -periaatteena on elvyttävän ympäristön luominen pihan eri käyttäjille. Pihan yleissuunnitelman pohjalta voidaan tehdä tarkempia toteutussuunnitelmia korttelin uudisrakentamisen aikataulun mukaisesti. Pihan vanha, arvokas puusto säilytetään ja suojellaan. Pihasta luodaan vihreä keidas alueen monille eri käyttäjille. Heitä ovat niin tukiasuntojen asukkaat, opiskelijat, sairaalan potilaat kuin alueella toimivien eri yritysten henkilökuntakin. Elvyttävään ympäristöön kuuluvat viihtyisyys, turvallisuus, monipuolisuus, esteettömyyden toteutuminen, yhteisöllisyys sekä yksityisyys. Suunnitelman ratkaisut perustuvat elvyttävän ympäristön teorioihin ja pihan käyttäjien sekä käyttöympäristöjen profilointiin. |
