Logging on to the customer computers

  • Aalto University staff members log on to the customer computer using the Aalto username and password.
  • Other customers log on using a shared username and password.

Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

    Aalto Thesis Database

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng): In the literature survey part of this study, electrolysis with a focus on electrowinning was introduced.
Anode materials for zinc electrowinning and the reactions occurring at the anode, cathode and in the electrolyte were discussed.

The experimental part of the study began with the construction of a system for measuring the weight change of an electrode during electrolysis on the laboratory scale.
The largest challenge was to construct a system to feed the current that did not cause a weight change of the electrode, which was measured with a microbalance.

The measuring system was then used to test different anodes and the effect of different manganese concentrations in the electrolyte on the anode weight was investigated.
The anodes tested were Pb-0.6Ag, with and without grooves forming different patterns and a mixed metal oxide (MMO) anode, which had titanium as the base material and IrO2-Ta2O5 as coating.
The concentrations of manganese tested were 0, 0.5, 1, 3 and 5 g/dm3.

The tests showed promising results for the patterned Pb-0.6Ag anodes as the formation of manganese dioxide in the electrolyte decreased substantially.
There was an increase in the amount of deposit formed on the electrode.
The patterning might decrease the stress in the PbO2/MnO2 surface layer and decreases the amount of metal oxides lost from the surface.

Discharging of the anode deposits was tested and showed that the system was sensitive enough to follow the dissolution of the different layers on the anodes.
With this information a clearer view the mechanisms for the formation and dissolution of the layers and which substances are involved, could be received.
