Abstract (eng): This thesis studies photography based equipment meant for pantograph coal condition monitoring.

A camera system for pantograph condition monitoring is a service provided for the train operators by the infrastructure manager.
The system is meant to aid in reducing the risk of overhead catenary line damage.
The system takes a picture of the passing train's pantograph and analyzes its carbon strip's condition.
The pictures can also be analyzed manually.

This thesis reviews various aspects of electrified railways, including the overhead catenary structure of electrified railways in Finland and different applications regarding the catenary/pantograph interface condition monitoring.
The operation of the APMS (Automatic Pantograph Monitoring System) unit is also reviewed based on material provided by the manufacturer.
The empirical part is based on the evaluation of the APMS unit's performance.

Based on the study done in this thesis, it can be said that the APMS unit takes clear pictures of the passing pantographs.
The results indicate that the amount of pantographs not pictured is low.

During the test period, several too thin pantograph coals were detected as well as one severely damaged coal.
The train operator was contacted several times during the test period due to pictures taken with the APMS unit, some of which led to pantograph coal changing.
All the notifications were done based on the manual checking of the pictures.

In conclusion, it is recommended that more equipment dedicated to reducing catenary/pantograph faults should be installed both on the track and onboard the trains.
Abstract (fin): Työssä tutkitaan valokuvaukseen perustuvan laitteiston sopivuutta sähkövetokaluston virroittimen kontaktihiilien kunnon valvontaan.

Koekäytön aikana saadun otoksen perusteella kuvaamatta jäävien virroittimien määrä on pieni.

Koekäytön aikana havaittiin liian ohuita virroittimen kontaktihiiliä, jotka edellyttivät vaihtoa ja yksi pahoin vaurioitunut virroitin.
Operaattoriin otettiin yhteys useamman kerran laitteiston ottamien kuvien perusteella.
Osa yhteydenotoista johti virroittimen kontaktihiilien vaihtoon.
Kaikki havainnot tehtiin käymällä kuvia läpi manuaalisesti.
