Abstract (eng): | The aim of this master's thesis was to study the suitability of rowan (Sorbus Aucuparia) as jewelry material. There are many properties demanded from jewelry materials which have not been studied by the forest industry. In jewelry use it is vital that wood is aesthetic and it can withstand scratching, UV-radiation, high humidity and water. This study focuses on researching how well rowan and seven different surface treatments perform on those preceding properties. Research revealed that the best way to minimize swelling of wood due to moisture is to manufacture it into a plywood form. The structure of plywood is very effective in countering moisture effects in longitudinal and latitudinal directions. Varnishing and oiling also decrease the swelling of wood effectively. The best result against the swelling was generated by using laminating paper as a primer and normal varnish on top of it. The best scratching and UV-radiation resistance was achieved by treating rowan with oil and wax. In jewelry use it is important that possible scratches and colour changes are as inconspicuous as possible. The results showed that the oil and wax treatment was superior on this area. |
Abstract (fin): | Tämän diplomityön tavoitteena oli tutkia pihlajan (Sorbus Aucuparia) soveltuvuutta korujen raaka-aineeksi. |
