You can read theses on the Learning Centre customer computers, which are available on all floors.

Logging on to the customer computers

  • Aalto University staff members log on to the customer computer using the Aalto username and password.
  • Other customers log on using a shared username and password.

Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

    Aalto Thesis Database

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng): Small distributed electricity generation units typically need to be remotely monitored and controlled, preferably cheaply.
This thesis documents the design, implementation, testing, and evaluation of a remote monitoring system for a wind turbine.
The monitoring system was built using an embedded computer for data gathering and radio modems for a data link to a monitoring server.
The monitoring server was connected to the Internet, over which monitoring data was accessed.

A quick overview of the structure of the electricity grid and communication protocols is presented first in this thesis.
A simple proprietary protocol was designed and implemented for data gathering.
Also object-oriented IEC 61850 (substation automation) and 61400-25 (wind turbine) communication standards are reviewed and tested, in relation to embedded computing.
Data transfer using both the proprietary protocol and IEC 61400-25 was tested and compared over the Internet and radio link.

Radio links and Internet were found to be feasible to use for remote monitoring of wind turbines.
The above mentioned IEC standards will probably be the wave of the future due to their all-encompassing approach, but their implementation and use in small embedded computing platforms can be challenging.
Security aspects are especially important in power grid control applications, but addressing them is left for future work.
Abstract (fin): Pienet hajautetun energiantuotannon yksiköt vaativat etävalvontaa ja - hallintaa, mielellään edullisesti.
Tässä työssä kuvataan tuulivoimalan etävalvontajärjestelmän suunnittelu, toteutus, testaus ja arviointi.
Valvontajärjestelmä rakennettiin käyttäen sulautettua tietokonetta tiedonkeruuseen ja radiomodeemeja tiedonsiirtoon valvontapalvelimelle.
Valvontapalvelin oli kytkettynä Internetiin, jonka yli valvontatietoja käsiteltiin.

Työn alussa on lyhyt yhteenveto sähköverkkojen rakenteesta ja tiedonsiirtoprotokollista.
Työn osana suunniteltiin ja toteutettiin yksinkertainen tiedonsiirtoprotokolla tiedonkeruuta varten.
Myös oliopohjaisia IEC 61850 (sähköasemien automaatio) ja 61400-25 (tuulivoimalat) tiedonsiirtostandardeja tarkasteltiin ja testattiin sulautetun tietojenkäsittelyn näkökulmasta.
Tiedonsiirtoa testattiin ja vertailtiin Internetin ja radiolinkin yli sekä IEC 61400-25 että työssä suunnitellulla protokollalla.

Radiolinkit ja Internet todettiin käyttökelpoisiksi tuulivoimaloiden etävalvontaan.
Yllämainitut IEC-standardit tulevat todennäköisesti yleistymään tulevaisuudessa niiden kokonaisvaltaisen lähestymistavan vuoksi, mutta niiden toteuttaminen ja käyttäminen pienitehoisissa sulautetuissa järjestelmissä voi olla haastavaa.
Tietoturvallisuusnäkökohdat ovat erityisen tärkeitä sähköverkon hallintajärjestelmissä, mutta niiden käsittely on jätetty jatkotyölle.
