Abstract (eng): | The current green revolution to combat climate change has greatly increased the research in alternative, ecological means of generating heat and power. Methods such as wind power, solar power, and fuel cells have gained more and more interest. One promising fuel cell type is the solid oxide fuel cell. Solid oxide fuel cells outperform conventional methods of electricity generation, such as diesel engines and gas turbines, in small-scale power generation plants. Solid oxide fuel cells are also suitable for co-generation of heat and power due to their high operating temperature. The generation of heat in the form of district heating is hitherto the most common way to utilize the waste heat generated by solid oxide fuel cells. However, on many occasions, there is no demand for district heating. Therefore, it is recommendable to integrate an alternative waste heat utilization method to the fuel cell system to achieve a higher net efficiency. This thesis investigates several alternative waste heat utilization methods. The utilization methods are divided into three categories: additional electricity, air conditioning and refrigeration, and dehumidification. The additional electricity generation methods include an organic Rankine cycle, microturbine module, and thermoelectricity. The air conditioning methods include an absorption chiller, adsorption chiller, and a vapor-compression chiller. The dehumidification methods include refrigerative dehumidification and desiccant dehumidification. The different methods for waste heat utilization were simulated computationally. In additional electricity generation, the organic Rankine cycle proved to be far superior over thermoelectricity, whereas the microturbine requires further research. In air conditioning and refrigeration, the exhaust gas fired absorption chiller is the most promising method in both technological and financial terms. In dehumidification, desiccant dehumidification is a promising method; however, it has a few drawbacks as well. Although the waste heat utilization methods presented in this thesis are analysed in a solid oxide fuel cell context, the methods can be adopted to utilize waste heat in many other applications, including gas turbines, internal combustion engines, and industrial processes. |
Abstract (fin): | Ilmastonmuutoksen johdosta vihreää voimantuotantoa on alettu tutkimaan yhä enemmän ja enemmän. Yksi lupaava polttokennotyyppi on kiinteäoksidipolttokenno. Nykyään kaukolämmöntuotanto on ylivoimaisesti yleisin jätelämmön käyttötapa. |
