Logging on to the customer computers

  • Aalto University staff members log on to the customer computer using the Aalto username and password.
  • Other customers log on using a shared username and password.

Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

    Aalto Thesis Database

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng): Pharmaceutical companies all over the world are currently searching for ways to decrease costs.
One function where the fulfilment of this strategy has concentrated on is supply chain.
However, companies often lack the right tools to turn a corporate strategy into a supply chain strategy.
This research has two main targets.
First, this research aims to generate a suitable supply chain strategy framework for a case company in pharmaceutical industry which takes into account the current corporate strategy.
Second, this research pursues to economically study contract manufacturing option as illustrated by the derived supply chain strategy framework.

The two different research targets have different research methodologies.
The creation of supply chain strategy framework applies constructive research approach.
According to this approach, a relevant solution for the research target can be synthesized based on both existing academic literature and the case company insight.
The economical study of contract manufacturing is a simulation study.
A model is created by which one can simulate the results that would be attained if the case company outsourced its production.

This research finds that there are basically three things that guide the supply chain strategy: corporate strategy, demand and supply characteristics, and desired level of integration.
One can build the supply chain strategy framework based on these drivers and position each topic currently discussed in supply chain strategy literature in this framework.
The economical study of contract manufacturing was able to attain net present values for four different contract manufacturing scenarios by the created simulation model.

Based on the supply chain strategy framework research, this research recommends the proprietary products -business division of the case company to hold the production in Finland and examine ways to make the supply chain more lean.
On the other hand, the specialty products -business division should strive for increasing external manufacturing.
When it comes to the economical study of contract manufacturing, this option does not look promising given the best estimates of how much cost reductions could be attained by contract manufacturing at the moment and the different effects what the outsourcing would have on the supply chain.
Abstract (fin): Lääkeyhtiöt ympäri maailmaa etsivät tällä hetkellä keinoja kustannusten pienentämiseksi.
Toimitusketju on funktio, johon tämä strategia on kiinnittänyt erityistä huomiota.
Kuitenkaan yrityksillä ei usein ole käytössä oikeanlaisia työkaluja, joilla yritysstrategia käännetään toimitusketjustrategiaksi.
Tällä tutkimuksella on kaksi päätavoitetta.
Ensinnäkin tämä tutkimus pyrkii rakentamaan case-yritykselle sopivan toimitusketjustrategian viitekehyksen, joka ottaa huomion yrityksen tämänhetkisen yritysstrategian.
Toiseksi tämä tutkimus pyrkii taloudellisesti tutkimaan sopimusvalmistuksen mahdollisuutta, joka on esitetty luodussa toimitusketjustrategian viitekehyksessä.

Näillä kahdella eri tutkimustavoitteella on erilaiset tutkimusmenetelmät.
Toimitusketjustrategian viitekehyksen laatiminen käyttää rakentavan tutkimuksen menetelmää.
Tämän tutkimusmenetelmän mukaan sopiva ratkaisu tutkimustavoitteelle voidaan syntetisoida sekä akateemisen kirjallisuuden että case-yrityksen näkemysten perusteella.
Taloudellinen tutkimus sopimusvalmistuksesta on simulaatio-tutkimus.
Tutkimuksessa rakennetaan malli, jonka avulla voidaan simuloida tuloksia siinä tilanteessa, että case-yritys ulkoistaisi merkittävän osuuden tuotannostaan.

Tämän tutkimuksen mukaan on olemassa perimmiltään kolme asiaa, jotka ohjaavat toimitusketjustrategiaa: yritysstrategia, kysynnän ja tarjonnan ominaispiirteet, sekä haluttu integraation aste.
Toimitusketjustrategian viitekehyksen voi rakentaa näiden tekijöiden varaan ja samalla sijoittamaan siihen kaikki tällä hetkellä toimitusketjustrategiakirjallisuudessa esiintyvät näkemykset.
Taloudellinen tutkimus sopimusvalmistuksesta pystyi saamaan nettonykyarvoja neljälle eri sopimusvalmistusskenaariolle käyttämällä laadittua simulaatiomallia.

Toimitusketjustrategian viitekehyksen tutkimisen pohjalta tämä tutkimus suosittelee alkuperäislääkkeiden divisioonaa pitämään tuotannon Suomessa sekä etsimään keinoja, joilla tehdä toimitusketjusta enemmän lean.
Toisaalta erityistuotteiden divisioonan tulisi pyrkiä kasvattamaan oman yrityksen ulkopuolista tuotantoa.
Sopimusvalmistuksen taloudellisen tutkimuksen pohjalta voidaan sanoa, että parhailla estimaateilla sopimusvalmistuksen kustannusvähennyksistä tämä ei näytä houkuttelevalta vaihtoehdolta, kun ottaa vielä huomioon ne vaikutukset, joita ulkoistamisella olisi toimitusketjuun.
