Reading digital theses in the closed network of the Aalto University Harald Herlin Learning Centre

Logging on to the customer computers

  • Aalto University staff members log on to the customer computer using the Aalto username and password.
  • Other customers log on using a shared username and password.

Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

    Aalto Thesis Database

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng): Hydrographic features in topographic base information require regular updates because land surface conditions and product needs change over time.
Traditionally similar procedures have been carried out by the photogrammetric techniques, which are considered of poor quality for channel extraction at a basin scale these days.
Owing to the fact that correction of datasets is no longer a cost-effective process, re-producing best quality data often seems the safest option.
Airborne laser scanning (ALS) has proven a major contributor to the revision of different datasets in recent times, including of hydrographic features.
The focus of the thesis was on the watercourses (line) of the National Land Survey of Finland Topographic database (TDB), represented on the application scale 1:10 000.

The thesis considers three different spatial data quality measures for estimating the error inserted by the system in ALS based DEMs, including a multiple buffer positional accuracy for linear features, root mean square error and channel sinuosity.
These measures will serve as a comparison of different streams on a study in the surroundings of Nuuksio National Park (Espoo, Finland).

The results show that the vector flow extraction from ALS-derived DEMs are considerably denser and closer to the observations in the field than those derived from the NLS 1:10 000 TDB watercourse (line).
Similarly, the method under study offers significant support for conventional means of capturing highly detailed hydrographic features from all types of topographies for the update of maps.
