Abstract (eng): | The thesis focuses on defining how image quality affects the outcome of 3D models in a reconstruction process based on photographs. The aim of the study is to observe key image quality attributes in the context of image processing and determine a threshold for sufficient image quality for 3D reconstruction. Seven scenes with varying geometrical forms and amount of detail were photographed for 3D reconstruction. Three key image quality attributes were chosen for image quality simulation: noise, sharpness and JPG quality. A total of 112 datasets were created by simulating low quality images with gradually increased noise levels, lowered sharpness and raised JPG compression ratio. Scenes were reconstructed using an automatic Structure from Motion algorithm. The numbers of 3D points in the reconstructed models were collected and results were expressed as the relative amount of points in the lowered quality images compared to the reference high quality datasets. Figures for the quality settings where the amount of points had dropped to 50 % were calculated to indicate a threshold for sufficient reconstruction quality. Results show that reconstruction of 3D geometry was successful in most cases even with severely lowered image quality. The conclusion was that any modern consumer grade photographic equipment could be used to create 3D models from photographs. However, image quality significantly affects the amount of 3D points in the reconstructed model. |
Abstract (fin): | Diplomityön aiheena on selvittä miten kuvanlaatu vaikuttaa valokuvista rakennetuiden 3D muotojen laatuun. Työn päämääränä on tarkastella kuvanlaatuattribuutteja osana kuvankäsittelyä ja määritellä raja-arvo riittävälle kuvanlaadulle rekonstruktioprosessissa. Seitsemän näkymää vaihtelevalla sisällöllä ja geometrisilla muodoilla valokuvattiin 3D rekonstruktiota varten. Kuvanlaatusimulaatioon valittiin kolme keskeistä kuvanlaatuattribuuttia: kohina, terävyys ja JPG-pakkaus. Yhteensä 112 kuvakokoelmaa luotiin korottamalla asteittain kohinaa, epäterävyyttä sekä JPG pakkaussuhdetta. Näkymät mallinettiin automaattisella Structure from Motion ohjelmistolla. 3D mallien pistepilvet tallennettiin ja tulokset esitettiin pisteiden määränä suhteessa korkealaatuisten referenssikuvien 3D malleihin. Kuvanlaatuattribuutin arvo jossa pisteiden määrä oli 50 % referenssistä, esitettiin raja-arvona riittävälle kuvanlaadulle. Tulokset osoittavat että mallinnus onnistui useimmissa tapauksissa jopa voimakkaasti alennetulla kuvanlaadulla. Johtopäätös on, että 3D mallinnus valokuvista on mahdollista suorittaa tavallisella kuluttajatason digitaalikameralla. Kameran kuvanlaatu kuitenkin vaikuttaa oleellisesti mallin laatuun 3D pisteiden määrässä. |
