Abstract (eng): | The primary goal of this thesis is to study the ice breaking process of an ice breaking trimaran in level ice. Defining the icebreaking process and the icebreaking components of an icebreaking trimaran enable optimization of hull form and ice management operations. The primary goal is divided into three sub goals of which the first one is to explain the small ice resistance as a function of the channel width of the icebreaking trimaran. The second sub goal is to study how the distance between the main and side hull effect on the ice resistance and the icebreaking process of the trimaran. Finally a straightforward a method to calculate the ice resistance of an icebreaking trimaran is developed. The primary goal including all sub goals are studied by ice model tests, which were carried out in Aker Arctic's model basin using their newest icebreaking trimaran model. The new icebreaking trimaran has a length of 81 m and a beam of 40 m. According to the visual observations the ice breaking process at the middle hull of the icebreaking trimaran follows the icebreaking process of a traditional single hull ship. However, the icebreaking process of the side hull deviates outstandingly from the icebreaking process of a single hull ship and the middle hull. The side hull encounters an ice field with micro cracks caused by the middle hull. These micro cracks work for breaking the ice between the hulls. Furthermore, the ice edge caused by the middle hull is freely supported whereupon the inner side of the bow of the side hull breaks the ice between the hulls with radial cracks using little energy. The outer side of the bow of the side hull breaks the ice traditionally with circumferential cracks, which often propagate all the way to the free edge caused by the middle hull. From the executed model tests it can be concluded, that the small ice resistance of the icebreaking trimaran is due to a beneficial icebreaking process and the small size of the side hull compared to the middle hull. The studied icebreaking trimaran breaks a 50 m wide channel with the same propulsion power as breaking of a 40 m wide channel requires, with ice thickness of 80 cm and with velocities less than 4 m/s. The optimum width of the ice breaking trimaran studied in this thesis is around 50 m when the ice resistance is determined relative to the width of the broken channel. The ice resistance increases substantially when the trimaran breadth is 60 m whereupon the ice breaking process turned to be more independent than for the smaller breadths according to the visual observations. The straightforward calculation method works well for the ice resistance of the side hull when the ship speed is less than 4 m/s. Additionally the calculation method works well for the ice resistance for the icebreaking trimaran when the ship speed is less than 2 m/s. However, the calculation method seems to underestimate the ice resistance of the trimaran compared to the measured ice resistance with higher speeds. Consequently, the calculation method should be used carefully because it is only developed based on one concept and small amount of data. |
Abstract (fin): | Tämän diplomityön päätavoitteena on tutkia jäätämurtavan trimaraanin jäänmurtoprosessia tasaisessa jäässä. Trimaraanin jäänmurtoprosessin kuvaaminen ja jäävastuksen eri tekijöiden määrittäminen mahdollistaa runkomuodon ja jäänhallinta-operointien optimoinnin. Päätavoite jaetaan kolmeen osatavoitteeseen. Ensimmäisenä osatavoitteena on selvittää mistä trimaraanin pieni jäävastus suhteessa murretun rännin leveyteen johtuu. Toisena osatavoitteena on tutkia runkojen välisen etäisyyden vaikutusta trimaraanin jäävastukseen ja jäänmurtoprosessiin. Viimeisenä osatavoitteena on kehittää suoraviivainen laskentamenetelmä trimaraanin jäävastuksen laskemiseksi. Tutkimus suoritetaan jäämallikokeiden avulla. Mallikokeet suoritettiin Aker Arcticin uusimmalla jäätämurtava trimaraanimallilla, jonka täysmittakaavan kokonaispituus on 81 metriä ja leveys on 40 m. Visuaalisten havaintojen perusteella jäätämurtavan trimaraanin keskirungon jäänmurtoprosessi noudattaa perinteisen yksirunkoisen laivan jäänmurtoprosessia. Sivurunkojen jäänmurtoprosessi eroaa merkittävästi yksirunkoisen laivan ja keskirungon jäänmurtoprosessista. Sivurunko kohtaa jääkentän, joka sisältää keskirungon aiheuttamia mikrosäröjä, jotka pienentävät sivurunkojen jäänmurtamiseen tarvittavia voimia. Lisäksi sivurungon kohtaaman jääkentän reuna on keskirungon puolelta tuennaltaan vapaa, jolloin sivurungon sisemmän puolen keula murtaa jäätä pienellä energialla säteittäisillä säröillä. |
