Logging on to the customer computers

  • Aalto University staff members log on to the customer computer using the Aalto username and password.
  • Other customers log on using a shared username and password.

Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

    Aalto Thesis Database

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng): The problem of digital learning systems, such as mobile learning environments is often the excessive focus on the technology.
M -learning projects are usually driven by technology companies and the applications often seem irrelevant and inconsistent for learning purposes.
Therefore, besides technology experts, designing an m-learning application should involve also educators and especially the users - students.

This thesis is a contribution to the interdisciplinary design of educational digital applications.
Research methodology of this thesis is highly qualitative, participating education technology professionals, school principals, teachers and students from two very different education cultures, Finland and India.
The objective is to create an opportunity framework on what kind of applications could be needed or useful in each country, and moreover, where and when they could be used.
The target group is 10-12 years old students and their teachers in Finland and India.

The research findings show that the needs for these countries vary.
Finnish education is modem, applying constructivist pedagogics, whereas Indian primary education still leans in very old-fashioned and behaviouristic teaching methods.
In Finland, the key opportunities are related to supporting ubiquitous (anywhere, anytime) and constructivist (problem-based, thematic, collaborative) learning, while the opportunities in India can be considered to relate more in teaching and especially managing the big classes.
As Indian education is changing fast, the framework suggests so-called constructivist features also for Indian education, in order to make teaching and learning more efficient, equal and relevant.
Abstract (fin): Teknologia on osa modernia koulupäivää ja erilaisten digitaalisten oppimisympäristöjen käytön uskotaan lisääntyvän tulevaisuudessa.
Kuitenkin, erityisesti mobiilioppimisympäristöjen implementointi on vielä kehitysasteella.
Syynä tähän on usein projektien liiallinen teknologiakeskittyneisyys, johtaen pedagogiselta sisällöltään puutteellisiin ratkaisuihin.
Tämän vuoksi, mobiilioppimisympäristöjen suunnittelussa tulisi paremmin huomioida myös kouluttajien, opettajien sen ennen kaikkea oppilaiden näkemykset.

Tämä diplomityö on tarkoitettu osaksi digitaalisten ja mobiilien oppimissovellusten poikkitieteellistä suunnittelua.
Työn tutkimusmetodiikka on kvalitatiivinen osallistaen opetusteknologian ammattilaisia, rehtoreita, opettajia ja oppilaita kahdesta hyvin erilaisesta opetuskulttuurista: Suomesta ja Intiasta.
Projektin tarkoitus on tuottaa kehys mobiiliteknologian ja mobiilien oppimisympäristöjen mahdollisuuksista käytännön tasolla.
Kehyksessä huomioidaan käyttäjien (opettajat ja oppilaat) tarpeet, joiden avulla kartoitetaan hyödyllisiä/tarpeellisia sovelluksia sekä missä ja milloin tällaisia "edu-appseja" voitaisiin tai tulisi voida käyttää.
Kohderyhmänä työssä ovat 10-12-vuotiaat oppilaat sekä heidän luokanopettajansa Suomessa ja Intiassa.

Tutkimuksen tulokset osoittavat, että tarpeet suomalaisessa ja intialaisessa koulussa eriävät.
Suomalainen koulu on moderni, soveltaen konstruktiivisia teorioita, kun taas intialainen alakoulu nojaa vielä vanhanaikaisiin behavioristisiin opetusmetodeihin.
Tutkimuslöydösten valossa voidaan todeta, että Suomessa mobiilisovelluksia voisi parhaiten hyödyntää konstruktiiviseen (ongelmalähtöinen, teemoihin ja yhteistyöhön perustuva), paikasta ja ajasta riippumattoman oppimisen tukemiseksi.
Intiassa taas mahdollisuudet liittyvät opetukseen ja erityisesti suurten ryhmäkokojen hallintaan.
Intian kohdalla työssä huomioidaan kuitenkin myös peruskoulutuksen nopea kehitys ja ehdotetaan mobiilisovelluksia konstruktiivisen oppimisen lisäämiseen, esimerkiksi hierarkian vähentämisen sekä kommunikoinnin parantamisen kautta.
