Abstract (eng):The aim of this thesis was to study the production chain of a cast component from the foundry, through a machine shop and ending at assembly plant of the end customer.
The goal was to identify any causes of waste in the production, to reduce lead times and costs and to further improve production quality.

The thesis was conducted by first making a literary review of Lean philosophy and its tools and of Six Sigma and its statistical analysis.
Value Stream Mapping was used to create an overview of the production chain and to help see any problem areas and causes of waste.
A current state map was created by following the part along its whole production chain and measuring all individual production steps.
With the current state map done a number of problem areas were identified and solutions were found for them.
To highlight the improvements a future state map was created to offer a visual representation of the target state of production.

Three main problems were chosen for improvement as they were easy to implement without large changes in production.
Order sizes were changed to allow for more frequent smaller deliveries of products.
This reduced the number of intermediary storages required at the foundry and reduced the storage time at the machine shop.
Unnecessary packaging steps were removed by switching to using a transportation rack, suitable for the automatic machining center used at the machine shop, in all production stages.
Finally the painting method was changed to remove a bottle neck in production and to reduce production costs.

Finally some possibilities for further studies, such as automated fettling and reducing sand defects, were highlighted.
These were issues that could not be tackled easily and were thus left for further review.
However they could yield further improvements in addition to the ones already achieved.
