Abstract (eng): | Modern on-demand transportation services offer a more flexible mode of transportation compared to traditional public transportation while simultaneously being more affordable than owning and operating a private vehicle. Moreover, several automotive and technology companies have released information about self-driving car development projects that aim to develop completely autonomous road vehicles in the near future. Autonomous road vehicles hold great potettial for revolutionizing on-demand transportation services and remodeling such services to become even more convenient, flexible, and affordable for the end user. However, as self-driving cars enable a myriad of currently unviable use cases and individual mobility to a wider demographic than traditional automobiles, self-driving cars can possibly increase the overall vehicle kilometers traveled and thus the external costs of road transportation imposed on society. The object of the thesis is to evaluate the possibilities of advancing on-demand autonomous road transportation with Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and administrative based solutions in order to curbthe increase of external costs ofroad transportation causedby autonomous road vehicles. Accordingly, advancement of a digital mobility marketplace for on-demand autonomous road transportation became an essential aspect of the study. Various aims and challenges for the mobility marketplace were recognized based on an extensive literaturereview and six interviews of experts in the field of ITS. Originating from these aims, a model was formulated for a digital mobility marketplace for on-demand autonomous road trans- portation. The mobility marketplace would enable a user to utilize all the on-demand transportation modes within a given area of operation through a common digital user interface. The system has a potential to drastically lower the external costs of road transportation and channel self- driving cars to be used as part ofon-demand transportation. However, the effects are dependent on the market penetration of the system. To adv ance the mobility marketplace and to respond to the challenges faced by the system a set of actionable items and measures was given. |
Abstract (fin): | Työn tarkoituksena oli tutkia mahdollisuuksia edistää kysyntäohjautuvaa autonomista tieliikennettä älyliikenteen tietoteknisten sekä hallinnollisten ratkaisujen avulla siten, että ilman kuljettajaa toimivien autonomisten autojen yleistyminen ei johtaisi yksityisautojen ulkoishaittojen kasvuun. |
