Logging on to the customer computers

  • Aalto University staff members log on to the customer computer using the Aalto username and password.
  • Other customers log on using a shared username and password.

Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

    Aalto Thesis Database

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng): This study was conducted in cooperation with Deltamarin Ltd, Finflo Ltd and ABB Marine.
The target of the thesis is to evaluate an actuator disk model feature in the FINFLO RANS solver and to develop a calculation procedure for ship propulsion design.

A potential flow theory based solver is used in order to obtain the running position of the vessel at a given velocity.
The output data is used as input for simulation of towing and self-propulsion test with the FINFLO RANS solver.
An actuator disc represents the propulsor in the self propulsion simulations.
Panel method based software is used to obtain the force distribution over the propeller blade in open water conditions.
The force distribution is then normalized and transformed for the actuator disc.
The effective wake and the thrust deduction factors are approximated in order to calculate thrust and torque values to be used in the first iterations of RANS simulations.
These values are calculated iteratively from propeller open water curves.

RANS simulations provide values of total resistance and total inflow velocities in the propeller plane, which are used to calculate effective wake and to update the thrust and torque values.
The simulations are stopped once the self-propulsion point has been reached, i.e. the thrust produced by the actuator disc is equal to the total resistance within the accuracy of 0.5 N.
Finally, simulation results are compared with model test results.
