Logging on to the customer computers

Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng): The current thesis compares simulation models of tyres by the dynamic multibody simulation program 'MSC.ADAMS'.
The aim was to specify which of the selected three tyre models would be best suited to running simulation tests of working machines and rough terrain vehicles.
A special emphasis was given to the properties of the tyre models to indicate their internal force vibrations.
The thesis comprises two sections, firstly, one of theory with a literature review, and secondly one with results of conducted comparison tests between simulated and measured values of the tyre models.

The theory section gives an overall estimation of forces in the tyre contact patch and in the tyre structure.
Further, the selected tyre models, i.e. 3Dtire, SWIFT and FTire, were assessed as regards their parameters and calculation methods of contact and forces.
The properties of the tyre models to show the internal force vibrations were also assessed.
The section ends with a summary of the advantages and disadvantages of the tyre models, on the basis of which two models were chosen for practical comparison.

The models 3Dtire and FTire were the ones included in the practical comparison.
The required parameters for each were measured using the dynamic tyre test rig provided by the Laboratory of Automotive Engineering.
This was followed by a series of comparison tests carried out using the same equipment, and subsequently by comparison between the obtained and simulated results.
In the context of the simulations, the advantages and disadvantages of both models are described as regards their applicability to simulation tests.
The comparison between the simulation and measurement results was carried out separately for each model due to certain problems observed in the simulation runs.

The objective of the thesis was quite well achieved, even though neither of the tyre models proved clearly better than the other, and hence no general recommendations could be made.
The choice of tyre model to be used in simulations depends on the properties desired to be tested, one suiting better for measuring certain properties than the other.
Some case-dependent recommendations are briefly discussed at the end of the thesis.
Abstract (fin): Diplomityön tavoitteena oli vertailla renkaiden simulointimalleja käyttäen MSC.ADAMS-nimistä monikappaledynamiikkaohjelmaa.
Kolmesta etukäteen valitusta rengasmallista oli tarkoitus löytää parhaiten työkoneiden Ja maastoajoneuvojen simulointeihin sopiva rengasmalli.
Lisäksi erityinen paino laitettiin rengasmallien värähtelyä kuvaaville ominaisuuksille.
Diplomityö koostuu kirjallisuustutkimuksen perusteella tehdystä teoriaosasta ja rengasmalleilla simuloitujen tuloksien vertailusta vastaaviin käytännön mittauksiin.

Teoriaosassa on käsitelty yleisellä tasolla sekä tien ja renkaan välisessä kosketuspinnassa että renkaan rakenteessa kehittyviä rengasvoimia.
Lisäksi on käyty läpi valitut kolme rengasmallia (3Dtire~ SWIFT~ FTire) tutkimalla niiden parametrit sekä kontaktin ja voimien laskentatavat.
Lisäksi on tutkittu, kuinka hyvin mallit pystyvät kuvaamaan renkaan sisäisiä värähtelyjä.
Teoriaosuuden lopussa on tehty yhteenveto mallien hyvistä ja huonoista puolista ja niiden perustella on valittu kaksi työkoneiden ja maastoajoneuvojen kannalta parasta mallia käytännön vertailuun.

Käytännön vertailuun valitut rengasmallit olivat 3Dtire ja FTire.
Molemmille rengasmalleille mitattiin niiden vaatimat parametrit autotekniikan laboratorion rengasvoimien mittauslaitteella.
Tämän jälkeen samalla mittauslaitteella tehtiin sarja vertailutestejä ja saatuja tuloksia verrattiin kummallakin rengasmallilla simuloituihin tuloksiin.
Simulointien yhteydessä on esitetty molempien mallien heikkouksia ja vahvoja puolia sekä vaatimuksia simuloinnin suhteen.
Tulokset vertailin kummallekin simulointimallille erikseen johtuen simuloinnissa ilmenneistä ongelmista.

Diplomityön tavoite saavutettiin melko hyvin, vaikka kumpikaan vertailtu rengasmalli el erottunut selkeästi edukseen Ja näin ollen ei voitu tehdä suositusta parhaasta rengasmallista.
Sopivin rengasmalli riippuukin tuloksena halutuista arvoista ja työn lopussa on annettu suosituksia mallien käytöstä.
