Abstract (eng): | This thesis work studies the packet data performance in UMTS taking in consideration the RAN parameters. Study of packet data performance is an ongoing process as it feeds information to different processes in the mobile network system. This thesis work is targeted to investigate the influence of radio conditions on packet data throughput, study the downlink radio link power for each radio bearer services and find some values and guidelines, which could be very beneficial in network planning and optimization process. The performance under study is for the non-real time traffic. The performance is studied by doing field measurements in WCDMA test network in Espoo using the File Transfer Protocol for downloading files in different radio conditions and for different parameters. The measurement results will provide useful information for network tuning, verification and performance maintenance purpose. The thesis begins with the overview introduction to UMTS and WCDMA. Brief discussion on the architecture of the UMTS network and its elements are also done. Then it is followed by the discussion of UMTS Quality of Service and traffic classes and the Radio Resource Management of WCDMA network. Power control, handover control, admission control, load control, packet scheduler and resource management are introduced. Then the packet data access, transport channels and bit rate allocation is explained. Node B power allocation, downlink radio link power allocation and different parameters are then discussed. The methods and tools used in this measurement campaign are introduced, followed by the results. Finally conclusions are drawn for the packet data performance study. |
